The Sémillon is a white grape and produces wines with a lot of extract and little acidity. Here's everything you need to know about this grape:

Origin of Sémillon

Semillon's origins can be traced to Bordeaux, France, where it is often blended with Sauvignon Blanc to make white Bordeaux wines. It is also grown in other regions of France, Australia, South Africa and the United States.

The taste and style of Semillon

Semillon is used to produce both dry and sweet wines. In Bordeaux it is often made into dry, oaky wines with a rich texture and complexity. In regions such as Australia's Hunter Valley, it is used to make delicious, botrytized dessert wines with honeyed flavors. Semillon wines are typically medium to full bodied with flavors of lemon, pear, apple and sometimes tropical fruits such as mango and pineapple. As the wine ages it can develop complex aromas of honey, nuts and toast. Semillon is known for its low to moderate acidity, which gives it a soft and round mouthfeel.

Dry Semillon pairs well with seafood, chicken and salads, while sweeter styles complement desserts such as fruit pies and cheeses. It can also be a great match with spicy Asian dishes.
