Günther Steinmetz produces characterful German wines with depth, finesse, and a distinct terroir profile. The winery has gained significant international recognition and is regularly featured on restaurant wine lists.

The wines are produced in small quantities, and the fact that they almost always receive more than 95 points — with some even scoring the maximum 100 out of 100 points from international wine critics — makes them even more exclusive. Since 2024, two wines from Weingut Günther Steinmetz have been exclusively distributed via the Place du Bordeaux. The rest of the range is exclusively distributed through Grandcruwijnen.

The History of the Günther Steinmetz Winery

The Günther Steinmetz winery is located in the historic wine town of Brauneberg on the Mosel. It was founded in the 1950s and is now in the hands of Stefan Steinmetz, who continues the family business with a strong focus on quality and authenticity. Under his leadership, the estate has become one of the most respected producers in the region, with particular attention to steep-slope vineyards and old vines. The winery combines traditional methods with modern precision, resulting in refined wines that receive international acclaim.

Stefan Steinmetz follows a natural and minimalist approach to winemaking. His methods include:
- Manual harvest: All grapes are handpicked to ensure the highest quality.
- Spontaneous fermentation: Using native yeasts without the addition of commercial yeast cultures.
- Minimal intervention: Limited use of sulfites and avoidance of fining and filtration whenever possible.

Location and Climate in the Mosel Region for Viticulture

The Mosel region is known for its unique microclimate and steep slate slopes, which are ideal for viticulture. The mild climate, with ample sunshine and cool nights, allows for a long growing season. This results in grapes with delicate acidity and aromatic complexity. The slate soils reflect sunlight and retain heat, which supports the ripening of the grapes. These conditions make the region perfect for producing vibrant and mineral-driven white wines, especially from riesling grapes.

Types of Wines from Günther Steinmetz

Günther Steinmetz is best known for its expressive rieslings. These range from bone-dry to noble sweet and originate from some of the most prestigious vineyards in the Mosel, including Brauneberger Juffer, Kestener Paulinshofberg, and Piesporter Goldtröpfchen. In addition to riesling, the estate also produces compelling pinot noir (spätburgunder) wines, notable for their depth, elegance, and structure. All wines are vinified with minimal intervention, enhancing the purity and origin of the fruit.

The Influence of Terroir and Old Vines

The strength of Günther Steinmetz lies in the use of old vines, often up to 100 years old. These produce low yields but yield grapes with high concentration and complexity. The combination of these old vines with the steep, slate-rich slopes of the Mosel results in wines with pronounced character and long aging potential. Each plot is vinified separately, preserving the unique qualities of the vineyards in the glass.
