From 30-year-old vines, the 2021 Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling "GB" is very fine and delicately slatey on the nose and reveals highly delicate Riesling fruit. Silky and crystalline on the palate but also impressively intense, though in a delicate and elegant way, this is a complex and persistently saline and savory JSU with a long, intense and structured finish. Impressive. 12% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in May 2023.

The 2023 Riesling Brauneberger Juffer GB, with GB standing for Grosser Brauneberger since Steinmetz is not a VDP member, opens with yeastiness and a touch of wet walnut skins and flinty reduction. The palate is light yet fluid, featuring lemon insistence, a smooth texture and earthiness pervaded by vibrant freshness. The finish remains fluid and lemony, retaining the lovely notion of wet walnut and saltiness.

What a stunning and faceted collection. Wilhelm Steinmetz founded this Brauneberg-based estate in the 1920s. Today, Stefan Steinmetz and his American wife, Sammie, run the operation. Their 13 hectares of vines span steep sites like Brauneberger Juffer, Kestener Paulinshofberg, Piesporter Goldtröpfchen, Treppchen, Grafenberg and Domherr, Mülheimer Sonnenlay, Veldenzer Grafschafter Sonnenberg, Neumagener Rosengärtchen, Detzemer Maximiner Klosterlay, Wintricher Geierslay and Oligsberg, Wehlener Sonnenuhr and Dhroner Hofberg and the monopole of Dhroner Grosser Hengelberg (where he crafts a vivid, clear-cut style of very fine-boned Riesling). Steinmetz sets store by reduced yields and absolute delineation of his sites. All the dry Rieslings go through malolactic conversion, yet their clarity and freshness would never make you guess that. This is masterful winemaking. Lovers of Pinot Noir should also remember the Steinmetz name, as these delicate yet resonant wines are compelling renditions of this fascinating grape.

Het wijnhuis Günther Steinmetz is gevestigd in het historische wijnstadje Brauneberg aan de Moezel.
