How does this wine taste?
How full and heavy the wine feels in your mouth, like the difference between skimmed milk and cream. More alcohol, sugar and oak ageing make a wine fuller.
How much sugar you taste, from dry to sweet. Fruity is not the same as sweet: a dry wine can taste of ripe fruit.
How fresh and juicy the wine is: acidity makes your mouth water. High acidity tastes lively and refreshing, low acidity soft and round.

Log inThe 2024 Günther Steinmetz Brauneberger Riesling clearly demonstrates why Stefan Steinmetz is currently considered one of the most exciting producers of the Moselle. This Riesling comes from the village of Brauneberg, one of the classic wine towns along the Mittelmosel, known for its steep slopes and slate soils that provide finesse, tension, and a pronounced mineral signature. The Brauneberger Riesling serves as an excellent introduction to the house style: pure, energetic, and remarkably serious for a village-level wine.
Günther Steinmetz Winery
Weingut Günther Steinmetz is one of the most respected family businesses in the Moselle. Under the leadership of Stefan Steinmetz, the estate has undergone tremendous quality development, with a strong focus on old vineyards, low yields, and minimal intervention in the cellar. The winery owns approximately 13 hectares of vineyards around Brauneberg and surrounding top communes such as Piesport, Kesten, and Wintrich.
Steinmetz's philosophy is clear: wine must be a pure translation of terroir. Therefore, natural yeasts are used in the cellar with as little intervention as possible. The goal is not to create a uniform house style, but to capture the characteristics of each origin in the glass as precisely as possible. You can read more about the estate under the Winery tab.
Origin and terroir of Brauneberg
Brauneberg is one of the most famous villages in the Mittelmosel and is known for its steep slopes with a high proportion of blue and grey slate. These soils store heat during the day and release it slowly, which helps with the even ripening of the Riesling grapes. At the same time, cooler nights along the Moselle ensure the preservation of freshness and aromatic tension.
Although this is not a specific vineyard bottling, the Brauneberger Riesling benefits fully from the typical conditions of the region. The combination of steep slopes, slate, and a cool microclimate creates finesse, tension, and that recognizable mineral undertone for which the best Moselle Rieslings are known.
Grapes and vinification
The wine is made from 100% Riesling and vinified with a strong focus on purity and terroir expression. The 2024 Brauneberger Riesling ages for approximately five months in stainless steel tanks , fully preserving its freshness, precision, and aromatic purity. The use of wood plays no role here; everything revolves around transparency and tension.
With an alcohol percentage of only 12% and a crisp acidity of 4.8 g/L, this Riesling strikes a beautiful balance between ripe fruit and freshness. The wine feels dry and crisp, yet retains enough roundness to remain accessible.
Style and taste profile
The 2024 Günther Steinmetz Brauneberger Riesling opens with aromas of apricot, ripe citrus, and yellow stone fruit , supported by subtle smokiness and a dark mineral undertone. The aroma immediately possesses that recognizable combination of ripeness and tension that makes good Mosel Riesling so appealing.
On the palate, the wine displays remarkable concentration for a village wine. The opening is compact and lively, with ripe fruit held in beautiful balance by fresh acidity. As the wine develops in the glass, the minerality becomes more prominent, providing length, precision, and a refined finish. Despite its elegant style, this Riesling has sufficient structure to continue developing positively in the bottle for several more years.

(Score 93) The delicately smoky nose pulls you into this beautifully proportioned and balanced medium-bodied dry riesling. The interplay of zesty citrus flavors with wet-stone minerality is dynamic. Very long, cool and focused finish. Drink or hold. Screw cap.
