Château Carbonnieux 1741 Blanc 2022, Pessac-Léognan

The Château Carbonnieux 1741 Blanc 2022 is an exceptional white wine produced only in the very best years. This exclusive cuvée pays tribute to the year 1741, when the Benedictine monks of the Sainte-Croix Abbey in Bordeaux produced the estate's first great dry white wine. Only 1,500 bottles of this rare wine were produced, sourced from the château's oldest Sémillon vines (approximately 70 years old).

This cuvée is produced only in exceptional years, when the harvest offers the perfect balance of ripeness, freshness, and tension. Production is strictly limited to a maximum of 1,500 bottles per vintage, making the 1741 one of Bordeaux's most exclusive white wines.

Terroir and vinification

The estate is located in the heart of Pessac-Léognan on the characteristic deep Garonne gravel soils interspersed with layers of clay and limestone. The vineyards are cultivated sustainably, without synthetic pesticides or herbicides, and the château has been certified HVE level 3 (High Environmental Value) since 2017.

The grapes were harvested by hand between August 29 and September 1, 2022, carefully selected (both in the vineyard and on sorting tables), and then immediately pressed. Alcoholic fermentation lasted 14 days.
This was followed by a maturation period of 3 years in total:

  • 12 months in oak barrels,

  • 6 months in stainless steel tanks,

  • and then 20 months of bottle maturation at the château.

The result is a wine with an alcohol content of 13.5%, a pH of 3.27 and an impressive balance between power and finesse.

Tasting note

The 1741 Blanc 2022 displays a pale yellow color with brilliant clarity. The nose opens with almond notes that, after aeration, evolve into aromas of apricot, white flowers, and subtle reductive nuances. On the palate, the attack is soft and full, followed by a beautiful combination of creaminess, freshness, and precision. The long finish reveals floral notes and mineral tension.
A wine with depth, texture and elegance, which perfectly demonstrates what old Sémillon vines on this historic terroir can produce.

Wine and food pairing advice

The 1741 Blanc 2022 is ideal with turbot in beurre blanc, grilled sea bass, smoked eel, or roasted scallops. It also pairs perfectly with aged cheeses like Comté, or with a creamy truffle risotto.

Château Carbonnieux is one of the oldest and largest wine estates in the Bordeaux region. The history extends over almost 8 centuries and the vineyard over a hundred hectares. The entire vineyard has belonged to the Perrin family for four generations and is located around the castle on top of a beautiful gravel hill. All wines produced depend on the Pessac-Léognan AOP. The vines, grown in sustainable and environmentally responsible agriculture, are intended exclusively for the production of red and dry white wines, both of which are qualified as Grands Crus Classés de Graves.

Chateau Carbonnieux has two Graves classifications for both its red and white wines. These are Grand Cru Classé and Grand Vin de Graves. The red wines are the Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Petit Verdot is used for the structure of the Grand Vin, but not for the Grand Cru Classé. The white wine is a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. Historically, Chateau Carbonnieux was better known for its white wines than its red wines.

In addition to the main wines, Carbonnieux produces two second wines: La Croix de Carbonnieux, made from the same plots as the grand vin; and Château Tour Léognan, made from young vines.
