Description
Of all the Bordeaux premier crus, Haut-Brion is the most charming, always elegant and refined and always in top condition, young or old. Haut Brion is the oldest and historically the most colourful estate in the Gironde - it was here that the first single-vineyard Bordeaux was made in the 17th century, first served in London coffee houses and praised by many eminent writers. In 1935, the estate was bought by Clarence Dillon, an American banker. He invested heavily in renovating the chai and the vineyard. In 1960, Haut-Brion became the first premier cru to replace the wooden barrels with stainless steel tanks. In 1983, the Dillon family bought the neighbouring Château la Mission Haut-Brion. Haut-Brion is almost always the fastest maturing and most accessible of the premier crus, but this easy, young charm is deceptive, because the wine ages beautifully.
The 2019 Haut-Brion Blanc simply has it all; energy, texture and striking aromas all racing across the palate. Don't open this 2019 bottle too soon as this wine needs time. The sheer richness and depth of the wine is so impressive. Hints of orchard fruit, white pepper, slate, candied lemon, dried flowers and chamomile build over time. The 2019 is a glorious wine.

The 2019 Haut-Brion Blanc is richer and rounder than its stablemate across the street, bursting with aromas of peaches, citrus zest, ripe orchard fruit, pastry cream and white flowers. Full-bodied, broad and textural, it's ample and enveloping, with a demonstrative core of fruit, lively acids and a long, saline finish.
Jean-Philippe Delmas is delighted with his 2019s, and justly so, as this rich, dramatic and unusually powerful vintage is a great success for Château Haut-Brion (and its neighbor, La Mission Haut-Brion). In the vineyards, a touch more Cabernet Sauvignon is being planted these days, but the evolution is subtle, as the 2019 blend remains very much in line with tradition at this address, at 49% Merlot and 43% Cabernet Sauvignon, with the balance Cabernet Franc. That predominance of Merlot, combined with Haut-Brion's warm mesoclimate, have delivered an above-average alcohol level, labelled at 15%. On the white side of the ledger, we can expect a touch more Sauvignon Blanc in the future, as Delmas notes that Sémillon tends to lose its acidity rapidly in warm vintages. In both colors, the vineyard team are working to mitigate the effects of climate change and minimize the quantities of copper employed in treatments throughout the year. In the cuvier and chai, winemaking remains very classical, with fermentation in Haut-Brion's proprietary two-tier stainless steel tanks, designed to maximize the quantity of high-quality free-run juice; malolactic fermentation in tank; and maturation in new oak barrels, some 80% of which are produced in house by Séguin Moreau (complemented by purchased barrels from Demptos and Taransaud). White grapes are whole-cluster pressed with great attention to pH, the musts protected with dry ice, and bottled with some 25 parts per million free sulfites, without much in the way of dissolved carbon dioxide.

Very aromatic, with a real airy quality of jasmine, lilacs, crushed stone, pear skin and apple, as well as some citrus. Full-bodied and dense with a creamy, phenolic texture that lasts for minutes at the end. Structured like a red wine. Reserved, compact and intense, and holding back for the future. Drink after 2028 and onwards.

Today, it is the wine's pure richness and depth that are so impressive. Hints of orchard fruit, white pepper, slate, lemon confit, dried flowers and chamomile build over time. The 2019 is a glorious wine. That's pretty much all there is to it.

Château Haut-Brion is located in the French municipality of Pessac, a few kilometers southwest of the city of Bordeaux. Haut-Brion is the oldest and historically the most colorful Gironde winery - it was here that the first Bordeaux was made from a single vineyard in the 17th century, first donated in London coffee houses and praised by many leading writers. The vineyard covers an area of 51 hectares of which just over 48 hectares are planted with red grape varieties (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot) and just under 3 hectares are dedicated to white grape varieties (Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc).
