Description
For years, Quintessa was the only wine produced at the estate, but recently, Illumination, Quintessa's white counterpart, was also introduced, made from 83% Sauvignon Blanc and 17% Semillon. The 2021 Illumination is a fresh and fragrant wine, with intense flavor and compelling texture. Notes of grapefruit, lemon, and white peach create tension, while botanical floral aromas of orange blossom, quince, lemongrass, and thyme add complexity and excitement. A bright and lively mouthfeel, with citrus aromas, hints of elderflower, and a distinct minerality, is balanced by a creamy texture and a medium-bodied, layered, and lingering finish.
ABOUT QUINTESSA
Quintessa, HIDDEN IN THE HEART OF RUTHERFORD, sits on a 280-hectare estate that reflects a diverse geology, biodiversity, exposure, and microclimate. Inspired by this distinctive terrain, founders Agustin and Valeria Huneeus believed it was destined to become one of the world's great wine estates. Today, a total of 160 hectares are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Carménère across 26 vineyard blocks. Each block is harvested—organically and biodynamically—and vinified individually to preserve the nuances of the land.
Depending on the vintage, Quintessa may contain some or all of the five varietals grown on the property: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Carménère. The fruit is harvested early in the morning, then sorted and gravity-fed into oak, stainless steel, or concrete tanks and vinified. Once fermentation and maceration are complete, the wine from each plot is aged separately in French oak for up to two years. After the final Quintessa blend is created, the wine is bottled and aged for another year before release.

Quintessa's 2022 Illumination is a blend of 50% Sauvignon Blanc (Musqué), 33% Sauvignon Blanc and 17% Sémillon, with 55% of the volume sourced from Sonoma and the balance from Napa Valley. Fermented and aged in a mix of oak, acacia and stainless steel barrels, plus a healthy proportion of concrete eggs, it boasts subtle hints of pencil shavings accenting pear, fig and melon notes. In this warmer vintage, there's even a hint of honeyed ripeness. Medium to full-bodied, it's silky, round and generous on the palate, then comes to a crisp, lemony finish.
My brief, late-day visit to Quintessa allowed time for a nine-vintage vertical of the winery's white wine, now simply called Illumination. Today, the core of the wine comes from the estate's plantings of Sauvignon Blanc (Musqué), with other contributions from southern Napa and Bennett Valley (in Sonoma), plus up to about 20% Sémillon from Calistoga. Harvest normally takes place between the end of August and the end of September, with the last fruit to come in being the Sémillon.
Winemaker Rebekah Wineburg vinifies and ages the wine in a variety of vessels, mainly used French oak barrels but also concrete eggs, stainless-steel drums, acacia barrels and usually around 5% new French oak barrels. Recent experiments include so-called cigar barrels (elongated 340-liter French oak vessels) and ceramic eggs. Malolactic fermentation is routinely blocked to help retain freshness.
Illumination is a fine example of Napanoma Sauvignon Blanc, being nicely rounded and harmonious in most vintages yet with enough zest and freshness to sustain it through a decade of cellaring.
