Château Olivier Pessac-Léognan Blanc 2023

Château Olivier is one of the classics of Pessac-Léognan and is known for both its red and white wines. The white variant is often one of the best value-for-money choices within the appellation. The wine is typically made from a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon, sourced from gravelly soils that provide tension and aromatic precision.

The 2023 is a modern and refined example of white Bordeaux. The style is crisp, fresh, and focused on purity, without excessive oak influence. This makes the wine immediately accessible, but also interesting for a few years of bottle aging.

Taste profile of Château Olivier Blanc 2023

On the nose, fresh aromas of citrus, lime, grapefruit, and white flowers dominate. Behind these come notes of green apple and a light spiciness. The wine has a bright and pure expression, without becoming heavy or sluggish.

On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied with a fresh, crisp structure. The acidity provides energy and length, while the texture remains soft and refined. The finish is tight and clean, with a fresh citrus line that lingers.

Harvest, vinification and aging

The grapes are harvested early to preserve freshness and aromatic intensity. Sauvignon Blanc provides the lively acidity and citrus aromas, while Sémillon contributes texture and roundness.

The vinification is focused on precision. Fermentation takes place under controlled temperature, partly in stainless steel and partly in wood, depending on the plot. Aging on the fine lees adds extra depth and structure without losing the fresh style.

Review and drinking window

James Suckling rates the Château Olivier Pessac-Léognan 2023 93 points. He describes the wine as refined and polished, with aromas and flavors of berries, blackcurrant, and citrus. The wine is medium-bodied with fresh acidity and a clear, lively finish.

The wine is already very drinkable, but will develop further and gain more complexity over the next 2 to 3 years. The ideal drinking window lies roughly between 2025 and 2028.

Food and wine pairings with white Pessac-Léognan

This wine is very versatile at the table. It pairs well with shellfish such as oysters, shrimp, and scallops. Grilled fish, sushi, and light chicken dishes also complement it beautifully.

Thanks to the combination of freshness and texture, it also works well with dishes featuring light, creamy sauces or goat cheese. Serve at around 8 to 10 degrees for optimal balance.

Although the history of Château Olivier dates back to the 12th century, Château Olivier as we know it today was designed by the Bethmann family. The Bethmann family is one of the oldest Bordeaux families and has been the proud owners of Château Olivier since 1886.

It is the many innovations and the vision of the Bethmann family, which constantly moves with the times, that have allowed Château Olivier to receive its classification as Grand Cru Classé de Graves in 1953 for both its red and white wines. The approximately 50 hectares of vineyards of Château Olivier are located about 11 kilometers south of the city of Bordeaux and are on average 20 years old. These older vines provide more concentrate and depth to the wines. To this day, Château Olivier's vineyards are harvested by hand and transported in small crates to the cellar, where they are carefully selected for ripeness and quality.
