EXCLUSIVE - EXPECTED SPRING 2028

Château La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc 2025 belongs to the absolute elite of dry white Bordeaux. Various critics even consider this wine to be the best white Bordeaux of the vintage. The combination of an exceptionally high proportion of Sémillon, very low yields, and remarkable freshness makes this wine one of the most complete and impressive white wines produced at the estate in recent years.

Winery Château La Mission Haut-Brion

Château La Mission Haut-Brion is one of the historical greats of Pessac-Léognan and, together with Château Haut-Brion, forms the absolute pinnacle of Bordeaux. The estate is part of Domaine Clarence Dillon and boasts some of the region's most prestigious terroirs. Although the red wine is world-famous, the white wines of La Mission Haut-Brion have for years been among the most sought-after and scarce dry white wines of Bordeaux.

Production is extremely limited. In 2025, yields were reduced to just about 23 hectoliters per hectare due to difficult growing conditions, an exceptionally low level that resulted in enormous concentration and intensity. The estate itself speaks of a vintage that was "blessed by the sun" and that fits perfectly with the tradition of great vintages ending in a five.

An exceptional white Bordeaux

The blend consists of 64.5% Sémillon and 35.5% Sauvignon Blanc. As a result, Sémillon plays a larger role than usual and largely determines the character of the wine. The Sémillon provides volume, texture, and depth, while Sauvignon Blanc adds tension, freshness, and aromatic precision.

Neal Martin calls precisely this Sémillon dominance one of the keys to the wine's success. According to him, this provides extra weight and complexity without loss of freshness. He even calls the 2025 possibly the best dry white Bordeaux of the entire vintage.

Volume 2025

The growing season took place under challenging conditions. Yields remained low due to difficult flowering and a dry summer. Sauvignon Blanc, in particular, was affected early in the season by limited fruit set. The subsequent drought further reduced the size of the berries, causing concentration to increase significantly.

Despite these circumstances, the team succeeded in producing a wine that combines richness with striking freshness. The harvest for the white grapes took place as early as August 14 and 21, one of the earliest harvests of recent years.

Vinification and aging

The wine was vinified entirely in oak barrels and subsequently aged in approximately 31% new French oak barrels. This relatively restrained use of new wood supports the structure without dominating the refined fruit. According to the château, the wood integrates fully into the wine and enhances the natural roundness and complexity of the Sémillon.

Color, smell and taste

The wine has a light golden yellow color with shimmering reflections. The nose is immediately expressive and complex, with aromas of white blossom, jasmine, linden blossom, lilac, mango, ripe white peach, and pear. Additionally, refined notes of verbena, apple blossom, and subtle exotic accents appear.

On the palate, Château La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc 2025 displays an impressive combination of richness and tension. The texture is full and layered, with a core of ripe white fruit supported by lively acidity. Flavors of blood orange, grapefruit, pear, chamomile, ginger, and a subtle touch of beeswax provide additional complexity. The wine possesses striking minerality and an elegant salinity that lends extra precision to the long finish.

What makes this vintage special is the combination of density and freshness. Despite the warm conditions, the wine remains crystal clear, energetic, and refined, with a tension that lingers well into the finish.

Summary of professional reviews

Neal Martin rates the wine 95-97 points and calls it possibly the best dry white Bordeaux of 2025. He praises the Sémillon-driven aromatics with apple blossom, white flowers, pear, ginger, and chamomile. Yohan Castaing of The Wine Advocate also awards 95-97 points and calls the wine one of the finest white Bordeaux of the year thanks to the combination of density, clarity, and freshness.

According to Castaing, this 2025 is one of the most complete expressions of La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc of recent years. The wine combines ripe white fruit, jasmine, linden blossom, and verbena with crystalline precision and exceptional balance. The consensus among critics is clear: this is one of the absolute references for white Bordeaux in 2025.
