Château Pape Clément Pessac-Léognan 2024.
A rich wine for this vintage, showing roasted spices and some dark chocolate to the blackcurrants, pine cones and berries. Sour cherries with sharp acidity and nicely chewy tannins on the medium- to full-bodied palate. Good structure and length. -

Description
Château Pape Clément, located in Pessac, is one of Bordeaux's oldest wineries, with a history dating back to 1252. Classified as a Grand Cru Classé de Graves since 1959, the estate benefits from exceptional terroir with gravel and clay soils that provide excellent drainage and heat retention, essential for grape ripening.
Grapes and Blend of the 2024 Pape Clément
The 2024 vintage is composed of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, 1% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot. This blend emphasizes the power and structure of Cabernet Sauvignon, combined with the softness and fruitiness of Merlot, and the subtle complexity of the other grapes.
2024 Pape Clement Rouge Vinification and Maturation
The grapes are harvested by hand and undergo a rigorous selection process. Vinification takes place in both stainless steel and concrete tanks, followed by aging in French oak barrels, a significant portion of which are new. This approach ensures a harmonious integration of fruit, tannins, and oak influences, resulting in a wine with depth and elegance.
Tasting note Pape Clément Rouge
Château Pape Clément 2024 presents itself with a deep ruby red color. The nose reveals aromas of ripe blackberries, plums, graphite, and subtle hints of cedarwood and spices. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and structured, with silky tannins and lively acidity. The finish is long and refined, with notes of dark fruit and a mineral undertone.
Jeb Dunnuck: 95–97 points – "Just classic stuff," with notes of ripe berries, scorched earth, and graphite. A wine with excellent balance and elegance.
Vinous: 94–96 points – Awarding the wine as one of the top wines of the vintage.

From: Event Horizon: Bordeaux 2024 Primeur (May 2025)
The 2024 Pape Clément now only comes from the original terroir in Pessac. It underwent a rigorous sorting such that 30% was deselected and the Grand Vin comprises half of the remainder. It is aged 70% in barrel (two-thirds new), 15% in foudres and 15% in concrete and stainless-steel/sandstone vessels. It has an elegant bouquet, certainly more restrained than recent vintages with crisp black fruit and veins of blueberry and iris flower. The palate is medium-bodied and powdery in texture with sappy blackberry and bilberry fruit, but the tannins just feel a bit sharp on the finish at the moment. Tasted four or five times, the 2024 is a Pape-Clément with good intentions but doesn't deliver on its promise. The same approach in a benevolent vintage would yield a far better wine.

From: 2024 Bordeaux En Primeur: The Razor’s Edge (Apr 2025)
The 2024 Pape Clément is unusual in that Cabernet Sauvignon drives the blend. That is evident in the wine's strong savory profile and overall structural feel. A reduction in the oak imprint emphasizes fruit and overall vibrancy. The 2024 is not as showy or easy to taste as most vintages, but the style here has also undergone a pretty radical transformation. It was vinified in oak, steel and concrete. A significant portion of the wine saw malolactic fermentation in tank rather than oak, as had been the case in the past. That adds up to a vibrant, nervy Pape Clément that represents a new era here.

The history of Château Pape Clément is one of the longest and most fascinating of all French wine estates. Pape Clément is one of the best Grands Crus of Bordeaux and is located in Pessac, in the Graves. It is named after its famous owner Pope Clemens V. Bertrand de Goth, from 1305 the first pope to sit in Avignon under the name of Clemens V, became Archbishop of Bordeaux in 1299 and on this occasion received the existing wine estate, which he then greatly expanded . Clemens' papal name is the reason the château inherited that same name and the wine became an icon.
After his departure to Avignon, the winery remained the property of the Archdiocese of Bordeaux. Since this period, the estate has remained well managed for five centuries. The limited production was mainly reserved for use by the Archdiocese itself. During the French Revolution, the château became public domain but was also successfully expanded. The wines were sold through clear management of the owners at the same prices as the 2ième Grand Crus Classés from the Medoc.
In the 1980s, Bernard Magrez, visionary and passionate wine lover, took over the chateau and made its reputation even greater. Bernard Magrez has used all possible means to ensure that the exceptional terroir of Pape Clément, which has made the wines so famous and gives them their extraordinary finesse, continues to express itself as strongly as possible.
