Description
Duhart-Milon is one of the most prestigious châteaux in the Pauillac appellation. In 1855, the château was included in the famous classification of Médoc wines. The château is now part of the Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) group. The history of Château Duhart Milon goes back to the early 18th century, when the owner of Château Lafite, Marquis Nicolas-Alexandre de Ségur, used the wines of Milon as his 'second wine'. Around 1840, the château, which was now called Duhart-Milon, already owned 40 hectares of vineyards of the highest quality. After a difficult period in the middle of the last century, Duhart-Milon became the property of the Rothschild family. A new period of great prosperity began.
Duhart-Milon Rothschild Bordeaux Blanc or Le Blanc de Duhart-Milon is produced on plots on the eastern side of the estate, towards Anseillan, where neighbouring plots of Lafite and Duhart are also used for red wine.
Thanks to a careful selection of Sauvignon and Sémillon clones, the grape varieties are optimally attuned to the character of the soil. The proximity of the Gironde estuary and the geological diversity – with soils from both the Massif Central and the Pyrenees – provide exceptional conditions for wine growing in Pauillac, north of Bordeaux.
The grapes are hand-picked into small crates and carefully sorted. After a cold pressing, the must is fermented in French oak barrels made by the Tonnellerie des Domaines in Pauillac – the same one that makes the barrels for Château Rieussec. The proportion of new wood is adjusted annually, but never exceeds 60%. The wine is then aged for about 8 months on the fine lees in these barrels. This method gives Le Blanc de Duhart-Milon its ageing potential without losing its freshness. The 2023 is a blend of 63% Sémillon, 37% Sauvignon Blanc.
The colour of Le Blanc de Duhart-Milon is pale gold with deep yellow reflections. The nose is initially closed, but opens up with aromas of acacia blossom and citrus, subtly supported by elegant toasted notes. Hints of flint add a mineral dimension. On the palate, the wine starts with a striking freshness, then gains in volume and depth. Lychee, grapefruit and white peach come to the fore, framed by a subtle touch of wood. The finish is long and refined, with delicate bitter notes that provide balance and elegance.

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2020 Duhart-Milon comes skipping out of the glass with vibrant notes of crushed black cherries, black raspberries and plum preserves, plus an exotic spice undercurrent of cumin seed, star anise and cardamom, with an earthy touch of black truffles. The medium-bodied palate delivers mouth-coating, juicy black fruits with a plush texture and just enough freshness, finishing long and spicy.
The blend this year is 72% Cabernet Sauvignon and 28% Merlot, with the alcohol coming in at 13.1%.
"For Duhart-Milon, the August rain was absolutely a godsend!," said Technical Director Eric Kohler, referring to the previous impact of the drought on the vines at this site.
This vintage is the first vintage vinified in Duhart-Milon's new cellar. "It enables us to divide the plots more," Kohler added. "Instead of 30 glasses, we had 50 glasses this year to blend. It gives us much more precision."
I've been very impressed with the upward trajectory of this Château, even given challenging vintages like 2020. A property to watch!

The 2023 Le Blanc de Duhart-Milon has less Sémillon (60%) than the first two vintages. It makes a difference on the nose, which is more malic, linear and strict, with fresh green apple and Anjou pear aromas. The palate is well balanced, with a touch of sour lemon on the entry. Later, hints of honeysuckle and chamomile emerge, segueing into a flinty finish. This is very fine.
