Description
the story of bodegas morca and the campo de borja region
Bodegas MORCA is part of the Juan Gil Family. Bodegas Morca is a relatively young winery located in the Spanish wine region of Campo de Borja. This area, in the province of Zaragoza in Aragon, is internationally known as the birthplace of Garnacha. The winery is part of the Juan Gil group, a family that owns vineyards and estates throughout Spain and has made a name for itself with distinctive and pure wines. Campo de Borja's location between the Ebro River and the Moncayo Mountains provides an ideal climate for the Garnacha grape. The contrast between hot summers and cool nights gives the wines their freshness and intensity.
Bodegas Morca focuses on small plots of old vines, often deeply rooted in poor soils of clay, sand, and slate. This results in low yields but grapes of exceptional concentration. Morca wines are known for their balance, elegance, and long finish, with Godina being one of their most recognizable expressions.
characteristics of the 2023 morca godina garnacha
The Morca Godina 2023 is a red wine made from 100% Garnacha grapes. The grapes are carefully harvested and fermented separately in small vats. After fermentation, malolactic fermentation takes place in French oak barrels. The wine then matures in these barrels for fifteen months, with each barrel being tasted and selected individually. Only the finest barrels are blended to create the final cuvée. This process guarantees the refinement and precision that characterizes this wine.
the Garnacha grape and the character of the wine
Garnacha is one of Spain's oldest grape varieties and has developed to a high level in Campo de Borja. The 2023 Godina demonstrates the grape's versatility. It is a wine with a ruby-red to purplish color. The aroma reveals notes of spice, licorice, ripe plums, and subtle oak. The aroma is intense but never overpowering.
On the palate, the wine is rich yet refined, with a full structure and silky tannins. There's a beautiful balance between ripe fruit, spices, and an elegant oaky note. The finish is long and clean, giving this wine a gastronomic character. It's a wine that will appeal to both lovers of powerful and elegant red wines.
harvest, vinification and maturation
The grapes from the 2023 harvest were harvested under ideal conditions. The vineyards are situated at high altitude, allowing the grapes to retain sufficient freshness. After hand selection and fermentation in small barrels, malolactic fermentation in French oak adds roundness and complexity. Fifteen months of barrel aging adds layers of spice and subtle toasted wood without overpowering the fruit. The result is a wine of power and elegance, ideal for drinking now but also suitable for several years of aging.
taste impression of the 2023 morca godina garnacha
The wine presents itself with a ruby purple color and brilliant intensity. The nose reveals spicy notes, with hints of licorice and plum, complemented by a subtle influence of French oak. The palate reveals a wealth of ripe fruit, supported by soft tannins that give the wine a velvety texture. The balance between power and finesse makes this wine particularly appealing. The finish is long, clean, and leaves an impression of spice and fruity elegance.
serving tips and storage potential
The Morca Godina 2023 is best served at a temperature between 15 and 18 degrees Celsius. Store the bottles in a cool, dark place with a constant temperature and sufficient humidity. This wine can be cellared for several years, but is also very accessible when young.

The 2017 Morca is an extremely dark, almost opaque, ripe and oaky Garnacha from head-pruned vines in the villages of Borja and Tabuenca. It fermented in open-top stainless steel tanks with neutral yeasts followed by malolactic and 22 months in French oak barrels. This is super ripe and heady, in the style of a mini-Amarone, with black fruit in liqueur and tons of balsamic notes from the élevage. It's hard to see the underbrush and the Mediterranean herbs that are there in the background. The palate is really powerful, aggressive; it feels too young and alcoholic. Tasting against the 2015, it feels like this needs at least another couple of years in bottle to become a little more civilized. But tasting these wines is hard, it's declinations of the same excess ripeness and oak in different degrees. 11,273 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2019.
Morca is the name of the winery in Campo de Borja from the Jumilla-based Gil Family Estates and vintner Jordi Flos. I had only tasted a couple of wines from the first vintage (2014), and they now have a whole range, of which they showed me up to three different vintages so I could get up to date. Here, they own 77 hectares of vines, and in 2017 they produced 80,500 bottles, but the project is designed to reach 200,000 bottles. The wines are even more powerful than the ones from Calatayud, perhaps a little more rustic, and they are also produced with Garnacha. I found the wines too ripe and alcoholic, and I had to leave the top ones in the glass to see if they developed any nuances, but that only seemed to increase the sensation of warmth and oak. Certainly not my cup of tea.
