Description
Bodegas MORCA is part of Juan Gil Family. Bodegas Morca is located in the village of Borja, in the province of Zaragoza and belongs to the Campo de Borja appellation - the region famous for the red firm garnacha. Garnacha grapes from small plots with low yields are hand-picked and fermented separately in small barrels and then transferred to French oak barrels to complete the malolactic fermentation process. The fruit for this masterpiece de Tourán comes from a very old small (single) vineyard
The Tourán is the top model of Bodegas Morca and is in the Top 100 of the Worlds Best Wines of Wine Spectator. This beautiful Tourán is a blend of great concentration and aging potential without losing freshness. Dark ruby red in the glass, the Touran has notes of roasted notes, smoke, baking spices and black olives with hints of fried corn and meat. It is full, juicy, intoxicating with present oak and fine and abundant tannins and a creamy finish. The wine is also vegan. It is a wine that will continue to improve with time but it will always be a powerful, ripe and oaky Garnacha. Only around 2,500 bottles of this masterpiece are ever made. This is super ripe and intoxicating, in the style of a high-end Amarone where freshness and power go hand-in-hand.

With the unashamedly big and ripe 2018 Tourán, they look for concentration and aging potential without losing freshness. Wines here regularly reach 16% alcohol, even in cooler and lighter years like 2018. It has abundant toasted notes, smoke, baking spices and black olives with hints of fried corn and meat. It's full-bodied, juicy, heady and generously oaked with fine and abundant tannins, the floral character coming intermixed with the notes of toasted bread and espresso coffee. It should get polished with more time in bottle, but it's always going to be a powerful, ripe and oaky Garnacha. 2,700 bottles were filled in August 2020.
Morca is the winery in Campo de Borja from the Gil family from Jumilla and Jordi Flos. The winery owns 100 hectares in the region and currently produces around 100,000 to 150,000 bottles, but the projection is to reach 400,000 to 500,000 in 10 years' time. Powerful, ripe and well-oaked Garnacha from Borja.

Opaque purple. Heady black and blue fruit, sandalwood, vanilla and floral qualities on the intensely perfumed nose. Alluringly sweet and expansive on the palate, offering complex, spice-accented black currant, boysenberry, mocha and allspice flavors that show superb concentration but come off surprisingly lithe. Plush, seamless and seductive in style, finishing spicy and extremely long, with velvety tannins building slowly and adding subtle grip.

This side venture of the sprawling, Jumilla-based Gil Family Wine Estates empire is a new (first vintage, 2016) partnership with their long-time general manager, Jordi Floss. It has quickly emerged as one of Campo de Borja’s best sources for high-quality, lush and expressive, even flamboyant wines, sourced from the bodega’s 20 hectares of bush-vine Garnacha, much of which is extremely old. Winemaking is overseen by Frank Gonzalez, who honed his skills under the legendary Chris Ringland, one of Australia’s most revered winemakers. The entry-level bottlings here deliver excellent value and are quite enjoyable when young for their assertive fruit and spice character and lush textures.

Bodegas Morca is found in Borja, the birthplace of Grenacha, iconic for its specific limestone soils that give the wines character. Situated on the Moncayo slopes you will find the 30-50 year old vines of Bodegas Morca. The cool winds from the north increase the wine's concentration whilst still preserving a freshness and lively acidity.
