Description
The 2018 Beauséjour Héritiers Duffau-Lagarrosse is an intriguing wine, as it is a clear departure from previous vintages. In 2018, the Beauséjour is noticeably fragrant and floral, with a compact core of red fruit and a brighter profile than the darker character normally typical of this cru. Although quite concentrated on the palate, the fruit is so rich that the usually austere tannins are largely pushed into the background. Aromas of rose petals, mint, blood orange and spice add nuance in a crescendo of scents, flavours and textures that is impressive. This is an exceptionally refined Beauséjour. A magnificent achievement by estate manager Nicolas Thienpont, consultant winemaker Stéphane Derenoncourt and their team.
About Château Beauséjour
Château Beauséjour was founded in the 19th century and has a long tradition in wine growing. The estate was bought in 1847 by Pierre-Paulin Ducarpe, who later left it to his nephew, Mr Duffau-Lagarrosse. Hence the double name Beauséjour (Duffau Lagarrosse).
Location: The estate is located on the limestone plateau of Saint-Émilion, a region renowned for its excellent wine-growing terroir. The estate overlooks the picturesque town of Saint-Émilion, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Château Beauséjour covers approximately 6.5 hectares of vineyards. The vineyards are planted with classic Bordeaux grape varieties, mainly Merlot (approximately 81%), followed by Cabernet Franc (16%) and a small percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon (3%). The vineyards are located on limestone and clay soils, which are ideal for producing powerful and complex wines. The unique terroir contributes to the minerality and depth of the wines.

1. Lamb chops with rosemary, garlic and roasted aubergine
The juicy, spicy lamb complements the rich structure of the wine, while the roasted aubergine accentuates the earthy notes.
2. Mushroom risotto with aged Parmesan and fresh thyme
The umami of the mushrooms supports the complexity of the wine. The creaminess of the risotto complements the soft mouthfeel nicely.
3. Roasted quail with lentils, bacon and sage
The juiciness of the meat and the earthiness of the lentils combine well with the floral and fruity profile of the wine.
4. Stewed beef steak with carrot, onion and bay leaf
Slowly cooked meat matches the intensity and depth of the wine. The aromatic vegetables enhance the spicy accents.
5. Duck breast with cherry reduction and celeriac puree
The slightly sweet sauce brings out the red fruit. The soft tannins and lively acids keep the whole in balance.
6. Stuffed ravioli with truffle, ricotta and parsley-butter sauce
The creamy, earthy filling matches the softness of the wine, while the truffle and parsley enrich the aroma.

The 2022 Beauséjour (Duffau Lagarrosse) saw a slightly longer élevage than usual, due to construction at the new winery, but that seems to have suited this broad-shouldered, powerful vintage very well. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of blackberries, blood orange, espresso roast, bay leaf and vanilla pod, it's full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with lively acids, chalky tannins and a long, creamy finish. This blend of 69% Merlot and 31% Cabernet Franc is the second vintage made by Joséphine Duffau Lagarrosse since she took control of the family estate in April 2021.

What a stunningly complex St.-Emilion from Beausejour, with spot-on aromas of warm bread and roasted spices from the wood. The nose also shows orange rind, hazelnuts, minerals and touches of cocoa powder, hibiscus, mussel shells, graphite and black licorice. Concentrated and compact in flavor, but juicy and effortless. Really fine-grained and focused, with chalky tannins slowly developing and growing on the full-bodied palate before a lengthy finish that lasts for a minute. An incredible wine. Drink from 2028, and this will age well over the next 20 years.

From: You’re Unbelievable: Bordeaux 2022 (May 2023)
The 2022 Beauséjour Héritiers Duffau-Lagarrosse was picked on 6-9 September for the Merlot and 23 for the Cabernet Franc, representing the highest percentage to date. It was cropped at 42hL/ha with 14.9% alcohol and a pH of 3.5. Aged in 68% new oak, it has a delicate nose that completely disguises that summer's warmth. Precise redcurrant and raspberry fruit aromas are laced with minerals. The limestone soils percolate and evince the estate's style under Joséphine Duffau Lagarrosse. It seems to deepen, to "stretch out" with aeration, manifesting more darker fruit. The palate is medium-bodied, mineral-driven and almost pastille-like in terms of purity with its mélange of red and blue fruit and granular texture. Background notes of tobacco and black truffle begin to surface with time. There's just a trace of white pepper on the finish. Precise, focused and with plenty of substance, this is a characterful and intellectually satisfying Duffau. Most importantly, not only will it be flippin' delicious, but you get the sense that Joséphine is only just getting started.
