Château Giscours Winery
Château Giscours is a Troisième Grand Cru Classé from Margaux and is one of the appellation's historic benchmarks. Since its acquisition by the Albada family, significant investments have been made in vineyard management, mass selection, and further modernization of the cellar. The estate combines classic Margaux elegance with technical precision and terroir expression. The large pond at the heart of the estate acts as a natural temperature regulator for the vineyards. More information about this winery can be found under the "Winery" tab.
Region and year 2023
Margaux is known for its gravelly soils, which offer optimal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2023 growing season saw classic low nighttime temperatures, while summer peaks were higher than average. Thanks to the estate's microclimate and a meticulous harvest with multiple passes per plot, full ripeness was achieved without loss of freshness. The result is a wine of power and refinement, confirming the château's upward trajectory.
Vineyards and grape varieties
The 2023 vintage is composed of 71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, and 6% Cabernet Franc. The dominant Cabernet Sauvignon provides structure, length, and graphite-like precision, while Merlot adds roundness and depth. Cabernet Franc brings aromatic lift and finesse. The plots are harvested separately based on ripeness and vine age, contributing to the layering of the final result.
Vinification and maturation
The vinification focuses on extraction while maintaining elegance. Maturation takes place in oak barriques, maintaining a balance between structure and fruit. The tannins are ripe and powdery, with a core of concentrated fruit and fresh acidity that lends tension to the whole. The long and rich finish underscores the serious ambition of this vintage.
Color, smell and taste
Deep ruby red in color. On the nose, blackcurrants, black cherries, and red fruit blend with violets, licorice, and subtle forest floor notes. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, layered, and powerful, with polished yet firm grape tannins. The fruit is pure and intense, with graphite accents and a light mineral note. The finish is long, rich, and classically structured, with impressive precision.
Development and professional assessments
The 2023 Château Giscours is among the absolute highlights of the year. The Wine Advocate rated it 94-96 points. Antonio Galloni even awarded it 96-98 points, calling it the best Giscours ever tasted. James Suckling awarded it 97 points, highlighting the purity of the fruit and its integrated structure. Its aging potential extends from approximately 2030 to 2063. The full review texts can be found in the Professional Reviews tab.

The 2023 Giscours is one of the real successes of the vintage, unwinding in the glass with aromas of dark berries, cherries and red fruits mingled with hints of undergrowth, violets and licorice. Medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, it's seamless and concentrated, with a fleshy core of fruit framed by ripe, powdery tannins and succulent acids, concluding with a long, broad finish. It's a blend of 71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc.
Now fully in the control of the Albada family, Château Giscours is at last about to construct a new winery, which should be operational for the 2027 vintage. The first new plantings using the estate's proprietary massal selections are also taking place. So, evolutions at this dynamic Margaux property continue to be fast-paced. In 2023, temperature lows were classic (aided, no doubt, by the large lake that serves as a kind of natural air conditioner at the heart of the estate's vineyards), even if highs were well above average. The team dared to wait for full maturity of their Cabernet Sauvignon, harvesting in multiple passages through each parcel according to vine age, as is now the norm at this address, to produce a wine of real character and plenitude that's a worthy follow-up to the terrific 2022.

The purity of fruit is impressive. Aromas of blackberries, black currants, violets and a hint of stone follow through to a medium to full body, with integrated tannins that are solid and polished and a long finish. Sweet fruit at the with an intensity and richness. Chewy in a classic way from the grape tannins that give tannins. 71% cabernet sauvignon, 23% merlot and 6% cabernet franc. Needs three or four years to come together. Better after 2028.

From: Bordeaux at the Crossroads: 2023 En Primeur (April 2024)
The 2023 Giscours is the very best wine I have ever tasted here. Giscours has been knocking on the door of Bordeaux's elite for a few years now. Two thousand twenty-three is the year in which Giscours joins the region's big boys and girls. A towering, majestic Margaux, the 2023 dazzles from start to finish. What a wine!

Giscours was in a dubious state when Nicolas Tari acquired it in 1954. Substantial investments followed and quality improved by leaps and bounds. In 1995 Giscours came into the possession of the Dutch grocer (supermarkets to Super de Boer and Edah) Eric Albada Jelgersma, who also invested heavily here, just like at his other Château du Tertre property and further improved the quality through a rigorous replanting and replanting program. The cellars were shed and new equipment was purchased. Today Giscours is again “the grand seigneur” it once was and worthy of a 3rd cru. With 200 ha of which 80 ha of vineyard one of the greatest assets in the Médoc.
