The 2025 Château Giscours confirms the impressive renaissance of this iconic Margaux estate. In a vintage that demanded great precision in both the vineyard and the cellar, Giscours delivers a wine that combines elegance, energy, and depth. Critics are unanimously among the greatest admirers of this vintage, and several reviewers consider this one of the strongest editions Giscours has ever produced.

Winery Château Giscours

Château Giscours is one of the most prestigious Grand Cru Classé estates in Margaux. The château has a history dating back to the 14th century and today boasts one of the largest contiguous vineyard holdings in the Médoc. Under the leadership of the Albada Jelgersma family, the estate has undergone an impressive rise in quality over the past thirty years. This continuous investment in vineyard, terroir, and vinification has brought Giscours back to the absolute top of Margaux. Moreover, 2025 marks the thirtieth anniversary of the Albada Jelgersma family at the château, which is being celebrated with a special anniversary label.

Why Giscours is so popular

Giscours is currently one of the most sought-after En Primeur wines from Margaux. There are several reasons for this. The château combines a strong international reputation with excellent value for money within the top tier of Bordeaux. Furthermore, the estate enjoys worldwide prestige thanks to its presence in over a hundred countries and its recognition as one of the appellation's benchmarks. Its reputation received an extra boost when the 2022 Château Giscours was named Wine of the Year 2025 by Wine Spectator.

Sustainability also plays an important role. The estate features approximately 400 hectares of nature reserve and biodiversity zones surrounding the vineyards. This long-term vision aligns with the philosophy of the Albada Jelgersma family, who have been investing in the further development of the château for three decades.

The wine and blend

The 2025 consists of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, and 5% Cabernet Franc. This classic Margaux blend gives the wine its combination of structure, refinement, and aromatic complexity. Cabernet Sauvignon forms the backbone of the wine, while Merlot provides texture and charm. Cabernet Franc adds extra freshness and elegance.

Terroir and vintage 2025

The vineyards are situated on deep Garonne gravel soils, one of Giscours' great assets. These soils ensure excellent drainage and yield wines with refined tannins, aromatic precision, and a characteristic freshness.

According to the château, 2025 naturally belongs among the estate's great vintages. The wine is described as having a deep Bordeaux character, with exceptional precision of expression, natural elegance, and a striking saline tension that prolongs the finish. The aromas move towards blue fruit, while the acidity provides energy and liveliness. The château sums up the style in three words: "Precise. Vibrant. Imperturbable."

Vinification and aging

The grapes were harvested between September 3 and 25, 2025. Following visual and manual selection, vinification took place in stainless steel tanks. Maceration lasted approximately 35 days at controlled temperatures. Subsequently, the wine ages for 17 months in French oak barrels, 50% of which are new. This approach ensures a perfect balance between fruit expression, structure, and refinement.

Color, smell and taste

Deep ruby red in color. The nose opens with wild berries, blue fruits, violets, and rose petals, followed by pencil shavings, cassis, and subtle spicy nuances. As the wine opens up, additional layers of dark cherries, floral notes, and refined minerality emerge.

On the palate, the wine reveals itself to be silky and seamlessly structured. The tannins are exceptionally refined, providing structure without any harshness. The combination of dark fruit, fresh acidity, and a striking saline tension creates an energetic style that feels both powerful and refined. The finish is long, aromatic, and impressively precise.

Summary of professional reviews

The 2025 Château Giscours is among the most highly regarded Bordeaux of the vintage. James Suckling awards 97-98 points and speaks of a wine of exceptional precision, energy, and purity. Yves Beck also gives 97-98 points and calls the wine fascinating and refreshing. Antonio Galloni rates the wine 95-97+ points and speaks of yet another magnificent Giscours. William Kelley (The Wine Advocate, 94-96 points) praises the ultra-refined tannins, the lively acidity, and the long aromatic finish. Jane Anson, Georgie Hindle, and various other leading critics emphasize the impressive development of the château and consider 2025 one of the strongest recent editions of Giscours.

Giscours was in a dubious state when Nicolas Tari acquired it in 1954. Substantial investments followed and quality improved by leaps and bounds. In 1995 Giscours came into the possession of the Dutch grocer (supermarkets to Super de Boer and Edah) Eric Albada Jelgersma, who also invested heavily here, just like at his other Château du Tertre property and further improved the quality through a rigorous replanting and replanting program. The cellars were shed and new equipment was purchased. Today Giscours is again “the grand seigneur” it once was and worthy of a 3rd cru. With 200 ha of which 80 ha of vineyard one of the greatest assets in the Médoc.
