Description
Bodega Marañones has the potential to express and create unforgettable wines, bringing the terroir of Sierra de Gredos into liquid form. Wines that offer a different view of Spanish wine culture. Wines often come from postage stamp plots such as in Burgundy and Priorat De Marañones is named after the location Marañones. It is part of the mountain at 800 m altitude, oriented to the north. We find the three types of San Martin granite: white granite, brown and pink. Each vineyard in Marañones has a different soil. Some are on a hill. Others are more towards the highlands. Bodega Marañones has been part of the Pago de Carraovejas group for several years, known for the top wines of the same name from the Ribera del Duero, but Ossian and Vina Mein also belong to this group. The aim is to add a top house from the most beautiful wine regions of Spain and to apply the same very high quality standards with which they already belong to the Premier League. In addition to Ribera del Duero, Rueda and Galicia, this house comes from the mountains of the Sierra de Gredos.
In this wine the aim is to convey the Marañones area that is so representative of the entire winery. That is why this wine is made entirely from the Garnacha grape, but these versions are incomparable with the jammy warm versions in other parts of Spain and France. These are almost Burgundy-looking elegant wines with the characteristic floral notes and light red color and with the perfect acidity. The garnacha grapes for the Marañones come from three single vineyards (Olivos, La Ladera & Peña Baja) with an age of 50 to 70 years located on granite soil, some parts with slate and sand. The vineyards have a north orientation located at an altitude of 750 to 850 meters. The vineyard is managed organically. After manual picking and selection in the vineyard, the grapes are selected again in the winery and only the most beautiful fruit is selected. The whole bunches are pressed with fermentation in wooden tanks of 33 hl, using native yeast. The wine is then aged for 12 months in French oak (used) barrels of 500 liters on its lees. The wood should never have the upper hand in these types of noble wines. The wine is unfiltered and not stabilized with sulfites.
The 100 percent Garnacha is fully expressed, both on the nose and in the mouth, with aromas of red currant, strawberry and a feeling of fleshy fruit while retaining a slightly crunchy texture. Then comes a complete softness, with the graininess of these granite soils rich in quartz. That nugget of quartz is noticeable in the texture, length, fineness, elegance and floral element of the wine. Only 12,000 bottles of this wine are made in the best years and only around 24 magnums.
