Description
Bodega Marañones has the potential to express and create unforgettable wines, bringing the terroir of Sierra de Gredos into liquid form. Wines that offer a different perspective on Spanish wine culture. Wines often coming from postage stamp plots such as in Bourgogne and Priorat. The Marañones is named after the location Marañones. It is part of the mountain at 800 m altitude, oriented to the north. We find the three types of granite of San Martin there: the white granite, the brown and the pink. Each vineyard in Marañones has a different soil. Some are on a hill. Others are more towards the highlands. Bodega Marañones has belonged for some years to the Pago de Carraovejas group, known for the top wines of the same name from the Ribera del Duero, but Ossian and Vina Mein also belong to this group. The aim is to add a top house from the most beautiful wine regions of Spain and to apply the same very high quality standards with which they themselves now belong to the Premier League. In addition to Ribera del Duero, Rueda and Galicia, this house comes from the mountains of the Sierra de Gredos.
The Picarana is the purest expression of Albillo Real, a wine that reflects the unique character of the Marañones estate and its surroundings. Thanks to natural ventilation, the freshness of the altitude and the optimal position of the vineyards, an exceptional balance is achieved in the vineyard. The vines, which are traditionally grown as bushes (goblet-trained), are between 30 and 70 years old and produce very low yields with small bunches.
The philosophy of respect for nature and tradition in viticulture and vinification produces a wine that expresses the variety in its purest form: floral notes, complexity, texture and perfect balance. This wine shows what Albillo Real has to offer in San Martín de Valdeiglesias, with delicate nuances, balanced maturation and a long, elegant finish.
The vineyards are located in a rugged landscape, hidden among trees at the foot of the Sierra de Gredos. The different plots are spread over a landscape dominated by forests and agricultural land. The Albillo Real grape vines, which have been grown in this region since the 16th century, bear witness to the rich wine-growing history of San Martín de Valdeiglesias. The small bunches of the bushy vines find a perfect balance in the southern Gredos conditions. The mesoclimate of the Marañones estate, located at an altitude of 750 to 850 meters, offers this grape variety a unique combination of freshness and ripeness.
The grapes are harvested by hand in 12 kg boxes and carefully transported to the cool room of the winery, where they rest for 24 hours. The grapes are then softly pressed and the juice is left to settle for another 24 hours at room temperature. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts, directly on the lees, in a 1,200-litre French oak foudre for 10-12 months.

The old Picarana white has been renamed to 2022 Marañones Albillo Real even though Picarana is still printed in small letters on the label (I guess to give it continuity). The wine is pale, very subtle, elegant, insinuating, clean and delicate, with precision and pristine aromas of white flowers and fruit, with a herbal and spicy twist. It comes from different vineyards, trying to express the altitude, granite and vintage with balance and elegance. The grapes were handpicked and selected to ferment with indigenous yeasts in 228-, 500- and 600-liter barrels and 1,200- and 1,500-liter oak foudres, where the wine matured for 10 months. It has a moderate 12% alcohol, very good freshness showcased by the pH of 3.23 and good acidity, 5.69 grams (measured in tartaric acid per liter of wine), for a variety that doesn't have much acidity. The mouthfeel is terribly elegant, pure and fresh. This is really impressive. 19,536 bottles produced. It was bottled in the summer of 2023.
Marañones was purchased by Pago de Carraovejas from Ribera del Duero in 2021. They were not very happy with the result from that first harvest, and last year they told me the wines were not going to be released. It seems like the wines were released after all, but they feel more comfortable with the results from 2022 despite being a much warmer and more challenging year. I also tasted one red already bottled from 2023, and it showed even better, showing the natural progression as they get to know their vineyards better and the effect of a less warm and more balanced year. I look forward to tasting the remaining 2023s next year. This is an old project with a new life in the hands of young winemaker Javier Blanco, who also makes the wines at Ossian.
The labels have been restyled and the names fine-tuned toward the name of the places but for now keeping the old names of the whites on the labels. The wines come from a myriad of small plots plus the main property that names the project, all in the village of San Martín de Valdeiglesias in the Madrid part of Gredos, even if Gredos is not (at least for now on the front labels) mentioned anywhere. They have a total of 25 hectares of old vines that are worked organically and biodynamically, but the wines are not yet certified. They produce an average of 60,000 bottles per vintage. A name to put back on your radar screens.

What an attractive albillo real with appealing pebbly minerality. Flinty, with wet stones, creamy white fruit and seashells. Pure and composed on the palate, with a medium body and a pretty long and serenely minerally finish. A very fine albillo. Delicious now, but can hold.
