Description
The history of Bodegas Marañones and the winemaker
Bodegas Marañones is located in San Martín de Valdeiglesias, in the western region of Madrid. This winery has made a name for itself in recent years thanks to a strong focus on local grape varieties and terroir-driven viticulture. Since 2021, it has been part of Pago de Carraovejas, a respected winery from Ribera del Duero. With this acquisition came a new impetus: the young, talented winemaker Javier Blanco, also responsible for Ossian's wines, now heads the vinification.
Under Blanco's leadership, Marañones has entered a new era, with greater precision in the vineyard and cellar. The vineyards are farmed organically and biodynamically. Although not yet certified, the approach is firmly natural and sustainable. Parker writes of this winery: ".....A name to put back on your radar screens"
The unique terroir of San Martín de Valdeiglesias
The vineyards are located at an altitude of 650 to 850 metres, in the foothills of the Sierra de Gredos. Here, a continental climate with Mediterranean influences prevails: warm summers, cool nights and cold winters. This altitude and temperature variations ensure slow ripening and a fresh acidity in the grapes.
The soil consists of different types of granite, including adamelite and toralite, with many sandy top layers. This produces wines with a characteristic minerality, elegance and structure. The rugged landscape, consisting of steep slopes and old vines, produces low yields but grapes of high concentration.
The composition and vinification of 30,000 Maravedíes 2022
The 30,000 Maravedíes 2022 is the entry-level wine from Bodegas Marañones, but far exceeds this category in character and quality. The wine is made mainly from Garnacha, originating from three valleys within San Martín de Valdeiglesias: Alberche, Tiétar and Iruelas. The grapes come from several small plots, some of which are over 70 years old.
The harvest was done manually in small crates. After a short maceration of the skins, the grapes were spontaneously fermented with indigenous yeasts, partly with whole bunches including stems. The fermentation took place in large French oak barrels of 3,000 to 4,500 liters. The wine then matured for 15 months on the fine lees in large wooden foudres and concrete cuvees of different sizes. This long maturation gives the wine extra depth without overshadowing the fruit.
Color, smell and taste of the wine
The 2022 30,000 Maravedíes is an example of finesse and intensity. In the glass, the wine shows a bright ruby red color with a light transparency. The nose is refined, with scents of ripe red berries, violets and lavender, complemented by subtle spiciness and mineral undertones.
In the mouth, this Garnacha offers an excellent balance between ripe fruit and fresh acidity. The structure is silky, with well-integrated tannins and a long, clean finish. The granite of the soils is clearly noticeable in the texture: salty, linear and dry, which gives the wine a serious and gastronomic dimension. Despite the warm year, the wine remains lively and elegant, without over-extraction or over-ripe fruit.
With 14.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.42 and 5.23 grams of total acidity, this wine has a remarkable balance. The 2022 harvest is proving to be a particularly successful year for Marañones, despite the drought, with a concentrated yet refined Burgundy style.
Why choose 30,000 Maravedíes 2022?
This wine is an excellent choice for those looking for a characterful red wine with elegance, tension and depth. The combination of old vines, granite soil and careful vinification creates a profile that is both accessible and complex. This makes it attractive not only for experienced tasters, but also for gastronomic applications in the hospitality industry.
30.000 Maravedíes is a true ambassador of the Garnacha from Gredos, without being heavy or sluggish. The floral and mineral profile offers versatility at the table and ageing potential for several years.

The 2022 30.000 Maravedíes is the entry-level regional red produced with Garnacha from very different parts of San Martín de Valdeiglesias (the three valleys—Alberche, Tiétar and Iruelas). It's a floral, perfumed and elegant effort with nuance and depth that transcends the price point. It only has the disadvantage of the torrid and ripe year that took it to 14.5% alcohol with a pH of 3.42 and 5.23 grams of acidity, good parameters for a ripe Garnacha without excess that still shows the granite effect in its texture, making it long and serious, beyond the fruit. It fermented with indigenous yeasts after macerating with the stems in 3,000- to 4,500-liter French oak vats and matured in oak foudres of different sizes and also concrete vats for 15 months. 13,250 bottles produced. It was bottled in the spring of 2024.
Marañones was purchased by Pago de Carraovejas from Ribera del Duero in 2021. They were not very happy with the result from that first harvest, and last year they told me the wines were not going to be released. It seems like the wines were released after all, but they feel more comfortable with the results from 2022 despite being a much warmer and more challenging year. I also tasted one red already bottled from 2023, and it showed even better, showing the natural progression as they get to know their vineyards better and the effect of a less warm and more balanced year. I look forward to tasting the remaining 2023s next year. This is an old project with a new life in the hands of young winemaker Javier Blanco, who also makes the wines at Ossian.
The labels have been restyled and the names fine-tuned toward the name of the places but for now keeping the old names of the whites on the labels. The wines come from a myriad of small plots plus the main property that names the project, all in the village of San Martín de Valdeiglesias in the Madrid part of Gredos, even if Gredos is not (at least for now on the front labels) mentioned anywhere. They have a total of 25 hectares of old vines that are worked organically and biodynamically, but the wines are not yet certified. They produce an average of 60,000 bottles per vintage. A name to put back on your radar screens.

Located at the foot of the Sierra de Gredos, Bodega Marañones comes on board as Alma Carraovejas' sixth winegrowing project. Despite its youth, Bodega Marañones has pioneered the production of quality wines in the Gredos area, positioning itself both nationally and internationally as a benchmark for exceptional wines of the Vinos de Madrid Appellation.
Bodega Marañones, a leading winegrowing project in the Gredos area of Spain and within the Vinos de Madrid DO is recognized both nationally and internationally for its high quality wine production and is located in San Martín de Valdeiglesias (70 km from Madrid) and will be led by Pedro Ruiz Aragoneses, who takes over from owner and founder, José Fernando Cornejo, who remains actively involved and this applies to the entire team at Bodega Marañones – a group that has fought tirelessly to put Gredos on the map since the winery was founded The vineyards of Bodega Marañones are located at the confluence of the Gredos and Guadarrama mountain ranges, characterized by its granite soil and where native varieties such as Grenache and Albillo reign supreme. The extraordinary beauty of this landscape - a mosaic of exceptional vineyards with 'postage stamp plots as we also see them in Burgundy and the Priorat. Located high between 650 and 850 meters above sea level, the unique combination of geology, climate and soil provides specific growing conditions. Bodega Marañones has the potential to express and create unforgettable wines, bringing the terroir of Sierra de Gredos into liquid form. Wines that, in our opinion, offer a different view of the Spanish wine culture with Burgundy-like wines.
