Description
Three young, but already very famous winemakers - Fernando Garcia ( Bodegas Marañones ) , Daniel Gómez Jimenez Landi ( Bodegas Jimenez Landi ) and Marc Isart ( Bodegas Bernaveleva ) - are responsible for the Comando G with the aim of further developing the Madrid Region de Grenache grape to develop. All three winemakers make Top Grenaches under their individual labels that can rival the famous Chateaneuf wines, especially when you consider the price. The area is ideal for the Grenache (high, warm during the day with significant cooling, large limestone soil). Their vines are rooted in mainly granite soils, vineyards at an altitude of at least 800 meters and are between 50 and 80 years old. Comando G was the name in Spain for one of those Japanese cartoon series from the 80's. Daniel Landi and his friends used this and Comando G stands for Comando Grenache where their mission is to make the best Grenache in the world. This is one of the most exciting new projects in Spain!
Commandos like to be inspired by Burgundy. This wine is also a good example of this. In addition to their plot of vineyards that they catalog as Grand Crus, we have here a 1er Cru from Rozas de Puerta Real at 900 meters altitude. Another very nice Garnacha! The Comando G Rozas has a bright red color, sparkling with even pink nuances. A fruit basket on the nose, packed with red fruit, berries, cherries and spiciness. Light as a feather, but what an ending! Lots of complexity. Another delicate Grenache!
FACT: The Rozas 1er Cru has undergone a small change in 2022 and has been turned into a village wine, the Rozas 2022. They selected the best five vineyards that used to go to the Rozas 1er Cru, vineyards they have been working in since 2012. In this warmer vintage they have carried out a gentler vinification, with less maceration and more fermentation without skins, to avoid over-ripeness and notes of black fruit in the wine. It has more fruit and some salty tannins, which are more like Italian tannins in the more Mediterranean years such as this 2022. 95/100 Parker

The Rozas 1er Cru has a slight change in 2022 and turned into a village wine, the 2022 Rozas. They selected the best five vineyards that used to go to the Rozas 1er Cru, vineyards they have worked since 2012. In this warmer vintage, they did a softer vinification, with less maceration and more fermentation without skins, to avoid over-ripeness and notes of black fruit in the wine. It has more fruit and some silty tannins, which are more like Italian tannins in the more Mediterranean years like this 2022. This village is more subject to the changes in the years, with more herbal and ethereal notes in the wines in cooler years and juicier and with more marked tannins in the warmer ones. It has 14.5% alcohol and is more jovial, definitely not banal. 10,992 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2023.
I tasted the latest bottled wines from Comando G that are hitting the market now, the regional and village wines from 2022 and the single-vineyard 2021s. The two vintages are extremely different, a more Mediterranean 2022 and a cooler, more Atlantic 2021. This is the finest collection of wines I have ever tasted from Comando G, each of them with a different personality, more and more evident each year.

Fragrant grapefruit and blood orange characters with a splash of Mediterranean herbs and white pepper. Scented, almost floral and a little brambly, but very vulnerable and sensitive. On the palate, this has firm, chalky tannins, with fine berry fruit and a long, bone-dry finish, yet it is not too austere. Such a beauty! Irresistible now, but can hold, too.
