Description
The history of Bodegas Marañones and the vineyards
Bodegas Marañones is located in San Martín de Valdeiglesias, in the southwest of the Madrid region, at the foot of the Sierra de Gredos. Here the estate cultivates around 25 hectares of vineyards organically and biodynamically, with special attention to native grape varieties. Since 2021, the winery has been part of Pago de Carraovejas, known from Ribera del Duero. Under the leadership of the young winemaker Javier Blanco, the wines are vinified with more precision and terroir expression than ever before.
Marañones works with low yields, old vines and traditional methods, focusing on pure, understated wines that remain true to the character of their origin.
The climate and terroir of Peña Caballera
Peña Caballera is a single-vineyard wine, coming from a 1.5 hectare plot at 850 meters altitude. The vineyard is located on a north-eastern slope with a subsoil of pure granite and white sand. This orientation ensures slow ripening and preservation of freshness in the fruit.
The climate is continental with Mediterranean influences. The days are warm, the nights cool. The vineyard is surrounded by fig trees, cork oaks and blackberry bushes, which contributes to biodiversity and balance in the soil. The grapes are harvested by hand and selected with the utmost care.
Grapes, harvest and vinification of Peña Caballera 2022
The wine is made from 100% Garnacha from very old vines. The 2022 harvest started early, on September 5, and was carried out entirely by hand. The bunches were left intact (whole bunch), including the stalks, and placed in a 2,100-liter concrete tank for spontaneous fermentation with natural yeasts.
After a gentle, slow fermentation, the wine matured for 15 months on the fine lees in a single large 1,500 litre French oak barrel. No clarification, no filtration – only minimal intervention to maximise the character of the plot.
Color, smell and taste of the wine
Peña Caballera 2022 is an elegant and precise expression of Garnacha on granite. The color is bright ruby red. On the nose, floral notes such as lavender and violets dominate, supported by red berries, soft herbs and a subtle minerality.
In the mouth the wine is fresh, with fine tannins, an elegant texture and a long, layered finish. The granite soil gives structure and tension, while the altitude and coolness provide liveliness and refinement. The wine shows itself slim, powerful and transparent - no wonder that this wine is seen as the Burgundy from Gredos
A challenging but successful harvest year 2022
2022 was a warm and dry year in Gredos, with early flowering and compact ripening. Thanks to the altitude of Peña Caballera and the cool nights, the grapes were able to ripen slowly and evenly. This resulted in healthy bunches with high aromatic expression and preservation of acidity.
The vintage shows the potential of this special vineyard, even under extreme climatic conditions. It is a wine that shows how precision in vineyard and cellar can lead to refinement and depth, without excess.
Why choose Peña Caballera 2022?
Peña Caballera 2022 is one of the most refined expressions of Garnacha from Gredos. This wine is ideal for those looking for:
Single-vineyard character from a high-altitude granite vineyard
Floral and mineral refinement with natural freshness
Artisanal vinification with minimal intervention
Gastronomic usability and storage capacity
A wine that excels in finesse and balance both solo and at the table.

The single-vineyard 2022 Peña Caballera shows high ripeness and 15% alcohol, reflecting the conditions of the year quite faithfully. It's from 1.5 hectares of old vines in the higher part of Marañones at 850 meters in altitude and with a north-facing exposure where the grapes achieved high ripeness. The ripeness detected on the nose doesn't quite show on the palate, where the granite texture dominates. It perhaps doesn't have the finesse and filigree of the cooler years, with a slightly larger grain and a dry and persistent stony finish. It has more moderate freshness and acidity. It fermented with full clusters in a 2,100-liter concrete vat and matured in a 1,500-liter oak vat for 15 months. 2,000 bottles were filled in the spring of 2024.
Marañones was purchased by Pago de Carraovejas from Ribera del Duero in 2021. They were not very happy with the result from that first harvest, and last year they told me the wines were not going to be released. It seems like the wines were released after all, but they feel more comfortable with the results from 2022 despite being a much warmer and more challenging year. I also tasted one red already bottled from 2023, and it showed even better, showing the natural progression as they get to know their vineyards better and the effect of a less warm and more balanced year. I look forward to tasting the remaining 2023s next year. This is an old project with a new life in the hands of young winemaker Javier Blanco, who also makes the wines at Ossian.
The labels have been restyled and the names fine-tuned toward the name of the places but for now keeping the old names of the whites on the labels. The wines come from a myriad of small plots plus the main property that names the project, all in the village of San Martín de Valdeiglesias in the Madrid part of Gredos, even if Gredos is not (at least for now on the front labels) mentioned anywhere. They have a total of 25 hectares of old vines that are worked organically and biodynamically, but the wines are not yet certified. They produce an average of 60,000 bottles per vintage. A name to put back on your radar screens.
