History of Viña Mein and the Ribeiro wine region

Viña Mein is a renowned winery located in the historic wine region of Ribeiro, in northwestern Spain. Since the relaunch of the estate under the name Viña Mein – Emilio Rojo , the winery has become known for its terroir-driven approach and its pursuit of precision and authenticity. The vineyards are located around Lugar de Meín, in the municipality of Leiro, an area with a long viticular history and a pronounced Atlantic character.

Ribeiro is one of the oldest wine regions in Spain and is characterized by a mosaic of small plots, rolling hills and a humid, green landscape. The winery works here with an ecological philosophy and strongly focuses on microvinification: each vineyard is harvested and vinified separately to preserve the unique character of the soil and microclimate.

The Avia Valley and its influence on Viña Mein Blanco

The 2023 Viña Mein Blanco reflects the landscape of the Avia Valley, where the vineyards are spread around San Clodio, Vilerma and Barouta. This area is known for its sábrego soils – a local term for weathered granite – and a climate with high rainfall and Atlantic influences. The combination of these soils and the fresh climate produces wines with liveliness, finesse and pronounced aromatic intensity.

The 2023 vintage was cool and wet, with significant rainfall from October through June. Early budbreak and persistent rain required intensive and precise vineyard management. The summer remained relatively cool and the harvest began earlier than usual, on August 22. This rapid harvest ended on September 15.

Grape varieties, harvest and vinification of Viña Mein Blanco 2023

Viña Mein Blanco 2023 is a blend of mainly Treixadura , supplemented with small amounts of Godello, Albariño, Torrontés and Loureira . These grapes are typical of the region and give the wine its characteristic aromatic complexity and structure. The grapes were harvested by hand at the optimum moment of ripeness in small boxes of 12 kg, per plot and grape variety.

After arriving at the bodega, the grapes were pressed separately and vinified separately. Fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks of various sizes and in foudres . The wine then matured for 10 months on the fine lees in the same barrels, which provided extra depth, texture and refinement. Only after this maturation period were the various components carefully blended and bottled. For optimum shelf life, the wine contains a minimal amount of sulphites.

Color, aroma and taste of the 2023 Viña Mein Blanco

Viña Mein Blanco 2023 presents itself with a bright, light yellow color with green reflections. On the nose, the wine offers an aromatic expression that is both floral and fresh fruity: notes of white peach, citrus blossom, lime, green apple and wild herbs stand out, with a subtle mineral touch in the background from the Sábrego soil.

In the mouth the wine is lively, fresh and harmonious. The structure is supported by a soft roundness and a fine acidity, which ensures a long, clean finish. The wine combines elegance with depth, and is a successful expression of the various grape varieties from the Avia Valley.

Viña Meín is one of those wineries that instantly sparks curiosity. Small in scale, but big in story. Tucked away in the green hills of Galicia, wine has been made here for centuries — and you can taste that history in every bottle.

Viña Meín history & location

The estate is located in Leiro, in the heart of Ribeiro, one of Spain’s oldest wine regions. As early as the 12th century, monks from the San Clodio monastery were cultivating vines in this valley. Centuries later, in 1988, Javier Alén breathed new life into the property by replanting the historic vineyards. Today, Viña Meín has grown into a benchmark in Ribeiro, with a strong focus on local grape varieties and authentic wines.

Grape varieties in Ribeiro

The strength of Viña Meín lies in the diversity of its grapes. Treixadura is the leading variety, loved for its fresh and aromatic character. Alongside it are Albariño, Godello, Torrontés, Loureira, Lado, and Albilla. For the reds, they work with native grapes such as Caíño Longo, Sousón, Brancellao, Ferrón, and Caíño Tinto. Together, they create a wide palette of flavors that is unique to Ribeiro.

Terroir and vineyards

The vineyards are spread across small plots in the Avia Valley. The landscape is rugged and hilly, with terraces and steep slopes. The soil is mainly granite and sand, locally known as “sábrego.” The climate plays a crucial role: warm days and cool nights, with temperature differences that can reach up to twenty degrees. This slows down ripening and gives the wines tension and aromatic depth. Each vineyard has its own personality, which shines through in the diversity of the wines.

How the wines are made

At Viña Meín, it’s all about respecting the grape. Harvesting is done by hand, in small crates. Most of the white wines ferment in stainless steel to preserve freshness, while the best plots are aged in large oak barrels and spend months on the lees. This adds depth and complexity, without letting oak dominate. The red wines are traditionally fermented and aged, with a focus on finesse rather than sheer power.

Specialties & facts

What makes Viña Meín stand out is how it blends old traditions with modern techniques. In 2019, the winery joined forces with Pago de Carraovejas, a renowned producer from Ribera del Duero. Since then, there has been more attention to sustainability and precision in the vineyards. Winemaker Laura Montero leads the cellar, with support from French oenologist Dominique Roujou de Boubée. Together, they are putting Ribeiro’s native grapes more firmly on the map.
