Description
the López de Heredia winery
R. López de Heredia Viña Tondonia, located in Haro, Rioja Alta, is one of Spain's oldest and most respected wineries. Since its founding in 1877, the estate has remained true to traditional methods. The family works exclusively with native grape varieties and uses only American oak barrels, in which the wines are aged for extended periods. This method, combined with fermentation in old wooden vats and an exceptionally long aging process, produces wines that are timeless and recognizable. It is impossible to fully understand Rioja without tasting the wines of Viña Tondonia.
vineyards and terroir
The grapes for this wine come from the renowned Viña Tondonia vineyard, located in a bend of the Ebro River near Haro. The soil consists of limestone and alluvial deposits, which provide finesse, structure, and a distinct minerality. The cooler microclimate of the Rioja Alta contributes to the elegant and long-lasting style that characterizes this estate.
the 2013 harvest
The 2013 vintage was challenging in Rioja, with above-average rainfall (753 liters compared to the normal 530) and a cool growing season. Hail in July and strong winds limited yields, and the late harvest didn't begin until October 7th. Despite the risk of botrytis, high-quality grapes were harvested, resulting in a wine with freshness, refined tannins, and lively acidity. The blend consists of 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha, and 5% Graciano and Mazuelo.
vinification and maturation
Fermentation took place in old oak barrels using indigenous yeasts. This was followed by an exceptionally long aging of at least six years in old American oak barrels. The wine was bottled in November 2021, after which it spent several more years in the bottle in the López de Heredia cellars. The 2013 Reserva will not be released until 2025, almost 12 years after the vintage. This extended aging, far exceeding the appellation's requirements, is characteristic of the house and guarantees wines of great complexity and aging potential.
color, smell and taste
The 2013 Viña Tondonia Reserva displays a garnet-red color with light brick-red reflections. The bouquet is refined and layered, with aromas of black fruit, dried roses, herbs, and balsamic notes. Subtle hints of truffle, tobacco, cedar, and vanilla enrich the whole. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, with lively acidity and chalky tannins. The structure is fine and elegant, while the finish is long and complex, with a distinct tertiary dimension typical of the classic Tondonia style.
reviews and storage potential
The 2013 vintage is highly acclaimed internationally. The Wine Advocate (95 points) highlighted the wine's refined acidity, fine tannins, and energy, despite the challenging weather conditions. Joaquín Hidalgo called the wine a benchmark for Rioja, with a layered, tertiary finish and a score of 97 points. With aging potential until at least 2045, this Reserva offers a unique opportunity to experience Rioja at its most classic and sustainable.

The canonical red 2013 Viña Tondonia Reserva has a developed nose of dried roses and tar that transported me to Piamonte but soon took me back to the López de Heredia cellars in Haro with the mixture of mushrooms, truffles, damp earth and decayed leaves, hints of brick dust and spice. 2013 was a rainy year, with 753 liters of it, well above the average of 530 liters in Haro. It was also a cooler year, and the ripeness was slow, so they didn't start picking until the seventh of October, but they had to hurry up because of the risk of botrytis. The crop was not so big, because they suffered from hail in July that affected the Viña Tondonia, coupled with strong winds that broke many branches. The breakdown in 2013 comes to 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacho and 5% each Graciano and Mazuelo that fermented in old oak vats with indigenous yeasts. All the wines age in old American oak barrels in their caves, in this case for no less than six years. It comes in at 13% alcohol with a pH of 3.4 and 6.6 grams of acidity, perhaps a lighter vintage with higher acidity that translates into a lot of energy, a fine-boned palate and very fine tannins with a vibrant finish. 190,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in November 2021. It should be released in the spring of 2025, almost 12 years after the harvest. And look at the price...
At López de Heredia, they are holding onto their 2005 Gran Reserva wines that will be released next year, and this year, they shall continue selling minute quantities of their exceptional 2004s. They are now releasing their Reservas 11 to 12 years after the harvest and the Crianzas eight years after the harvest, which is a much longer élevage than required by the appellation and even longer than they used to do.

From: The Diverse Villages of Rioja: A New Trend Emerges (May 2025)
The 2013 Reserva Viña Tondonia is a blend of 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha and 10% Graciano and Mazuelo, grown in the calcareous soils of the Tondonia meander in Rioja Alta. Aged extensively in American oak, it offers restrained black fruit, wild herbs, balsamic hints and sweet spices with gentle cedar and vanilla notes. Medium-bodied with chalky grip and a layered, tertiary finish, this is a benchmark classic—refined, enduring and unmistakably Tondonia.
- By Joaquín Hidalgo on May 2025
You can’t fully understand Rioja without tasting the wines of R. López de Heredia. For more than 60 years, the estate has produced wines in a remarkably consistent style, using distinctive methods of vineyard management and élevage. Only American oak is used—both in large and small formats—and the wines undergo long, oxidative aging to achieve a gently balanced profile. This oxidative approach slows their evolution significantly. To test that premise, we opened several bottles from the 1960s and 1970s during this visit. The continuity between past and present is striking, especially in the white Viña Tondonia.

It all started in the 19th century when French negotiators visited the Rioja region to find good grapes that they could use to produce wine and the founder of the winery López de Heredia, Don Rafael López de Heredia y Landeta, took the vineyards of the French. Soon Rafael fell in love with the area and found that the climate and soil was perfect for making quality wine. He started making the López de Heredia winery in Haro in 1877. López de Heredia is a winery where the owners really care about their estate and give a lot of attention to the vineyards and this is also reflected in the wines.
In the town of Haro, the López de Heredia Viña Tondonia is the oldest winery in the city and one of the first four wineries in La Rioja. The strategic location of the vineyards, the exceptional quality of the plantations and the varieties used, which are perfectly complemented by a special architecture, ensure that these wines are of a high level and are among the best wines from the Rioja. The wines are real icons of Spanish wine growing.
The most famous and best vineyard of López de Heredia is called Tondonia and it is located on the bank of the river Ebra, where several good vineyards are located. Tondonia is about 100 hectares in size and has got its name from the term for the meander (bend) at the river Ebro in which Tondonia is located: Tondon. Besides Tondonia, Lopez de Heredia also has three other vineyards in the Rioja Alta area, namely: The Viña Cubillo, Viña Bosconia and the Viña Gravonia.
