This Vina Cubillo from Tondonia comes from one of the most prestigious vineyards in La Rioja. The Vina Cubillo Crianza is their most famous wine, featuring grapes sourced from the Cubillo vineyard. The Cubillo is a blend of the usual 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacho, 5% Graciano, and 5% Mazuelo grapes, fermented in old oak barrels with natural yeasts and further aged in barrels for three years. After this, the wine can age even further. The color is bright ruby red. It has a persistent aroma with a consistent texture and hints of licorice. The taste is soft, fresh, and delightfully persistent. This classic Rioja bears no resemblance to the modern Riojas aged in French oak. A wine for the lover of classic Riojas!

The red 2018 Viña Cubillo Tinto Crianza is pretty and attractive, fresh and aromatic, floral, the result of a challenging year with lots of rain and high humidity. This is usually the last vineyard to be harvested, and the grapes were picked late, the 26th of October. It's a blend of 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacho and 5% each Graciano and Mazuelo that matured in a combination of oak vats and well-seasoned American oak barrels for six years. It's elegant and clean, young and undeveloped, with very fine tannins and a sleek, polished mouthfeel. It has 13.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.0 and 6.5 grams of acidity. This could be the finest Cubillo in recent times, and it's a bargain. 120,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in March 2024.
López de Heredia is releasing their Gran Reserva wines from 2005, now 21 years after the harvest. I tasted with María José López de Heredia, who was worried about the climate—even in Rioja, they are suffering the consequences—and how to keep contained alcohol in the wines. She was also worried about artificial intelligence and the digitalization of the world. But she's very happy with her wines, selling them like never before, and getting the recognition from consumers around the world. But she's also aware about the speculation with highly sought-after wines.
At the time, she hated 2015 because the red wines seemed overripe early on, perhaps the beginning of the warm vintages, but the wines now show balance. It was different for whites, because the 2015 whites were picked with good freshness. She compared 2004, 2005 and 2006 with 1994, 1995 and 1996. She says she always liked 2005, which she thought was a more powerful year, while 2024 was a little cooler. They didn't produce Gran Reserva in 2026, so the next vintage for the Gran Reserva bottlings will be 2007, when the three wines will come back. But she also insisted that there are not that many differences from vintage to vintage, because they want the wines to have a similar profile ("we have never released a Tondonia wine with 14% alcohol; we have never done it, and we will never do it"), even blending some vintages to keep the profile, especially the lower alcohol.

Savory berries with aromas of white pepper, blood orange peel, preserved plums, iron and a touch of dust. Still pretty structured and intense, with a medium to full body, but juicy and long. Drink or hold.

From: 2022, 2023 and 2024: The Rioja Renaissance (Apr 2026)
Aged for three years in 225-liter American oak, the 2018 Crianza Viña Cubillo (70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha, 5% Graciano, 5% Mazuelo) displays deeper black fruit than is typical for the house. On the nose, sandalwood, cedar and delicate vanilla intertwine with intense field herbs and pine. The palate is defined by chalky tension and agile freshness, supported by light grip and a persistent, savory finish.

Its impossible to understand Rioja without tasting López de Heredia. For more than 60 years, the estate has produced wines in a remarkably consistent style, using distinctive methods of vineyard management and élevage. Only American oak is used—both in large and small formats—and the wines undergo long, oxidative aging to achieve a gently balanced profile. This oxidative approach slows evolution significantly. I tasted a few wines from the 1960s and 1970s during my visit that made that point clear. The continuity between past and present is striking, especially in the white Viña Tondonia.

López de Heredia stands as a consistent reference within Rioja. The family estate has worked since 1877 with a focus on long ageing, strict selection and controlled cellar methods. Every wine results from patience and experience. This approach delivers tension, clarity and structure.
López de Heredia winery in Rioja
In the 19th century, French merchants travelled through the region to find grapes for their own production. Don Rafael López de Heredia y Landeta took over their vineyards and recognised the potential of the area. He saw that the climate and the soil offered ideal conditions for quality wine. In 1877 he founded the winery in Haro. The estate grew through consistent care for each vineyard. This mindset remains visible in all cuvées. The wines belong to the leading wines of Rioja.
López de Heredia Viña Tondonia is the oldest winery in Haro and one of the first four producers in La Rioja. Strategic locations, strong vineyard parcels and fitting grape varieties result in wines with a clear profile. These wines remain important references within Spanish wine culture.
The most famous vineyard is Tondonia. It lies along the Ebro and spans around one hundred hectares. The name refers to the river bend where the vineyard sits. The estate also owns Viña Cubillo, Viña Bosconia and Viña Gravonia in Rioja Alta. Each parcel contributes fruit with its own character.
López de Heredia vineyards and grape varieties
Vineyards around Haro combine clay, limestone and river deposits. Summers stay warm with cool nights. This balance preserves tension in the fruit. Red wines rely on Tempranillo supported by Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano. White wines use Viura as the base, complemented by Malvasia. This combination delivers freshness, length and stability.
López de Heredia vinification and ageing
The cellar forms an essential part of the estate. An in-house cooperage maintains every barrel. This ensures full control over wood quality. Fermentation takes place in traditional vats. Ageing occurs in old American oak. Red wines remain three to six years in barrels. White wines follow similar timelines. After bottling, the wines continue ageing for many years in the cellar.
Style of López de Heredia wines
Red wines show a lean structure, soft tannins and bright acidity. Aromas include red fruit, dried herbs and light oak tones. White wines combine fresh acidity with oxidative depth. Rosado stands as a separate style. Viña Tondonia Rosado spends long periods in barrel and bottle and shows notable complexity.
López de Heredia Viña Tondonia and other cuvées
Viña Tondonia Reserva remains a stable reference within Rioja. The fruit comes from the vineyard along the Ebro. Viña Bosconia Reserva gives fuller aromas and warmer tones. Gran Reservas age longer in barrel and bottle. Viña Tondonia Blanco Reserva uses Viura and Malvasia with extended ageing. Blanco Gran Reserva appears only in strong years.
López de Heredia vineyard work
Soil health forms the foundation of the estate. Natural ground cover, manual pruning and careful selection result in healthy fruit. This approach ensures clear expression and stable profiles in all wines.
Some Facts about López de Heredia
The family keeps original documents in which Don Rafael recorded every cellar movement. The cooperage has maintained all barrels for more than a century. Several fermentation vats have stood in the cellar since the 19th century and remain in use. A dedicated room stores labels and capsules from all periods. The estate holds bottles from nearly every vintage since the beginning. Viña Tondonia Rosado once disappeared from the market and returned due to requests from wine lovers.
