Description
The Sierra Cantabria Reserva has a very good price-quality ratio. The Sierra Cantabria is a 100% tempranillo from 30+ year old vineyards located on calcareous clay with gravel. Environmentally integrated agricultural cultivation, with respect for the environment, according to the biorhythm of the plant. The average yield is low and is around: 35 Hltr/ Ha. The hand-harvested bunches are selected in the vineyard and in the winery by means of a double sorting table.
The grapes are completely destemmed. Temperature-controlled fermentation between 28 and 30 degrees Celsius with indigenous yeast selected from our own vineyards. Extended post-fermentative maceration on the skins for 11 days, with pumping over twice a day at the beginning and a light pumping over every day at the end. The wine then remains for 17-18 months in Bordelaise barrels of (70%) French and (30%) American oak.
The Sierra Cantabria Reserva shows balance and equilibrium. The wine is medium bodied with spicy, smoky and creamy flavours and good acidity. A firm and silky red with nice clarity. Dark berries, hints of cedar and tobacco. In the Tab: Attachment you will find the official factsheet of this beautiful Rioja Reserva.

A lovely gran reserva that has lots of fruit, peppery spices, vanilla and touches of balsamic and tobacco. Excellent acidity, with a medium body and firm, dusty tannins. Very long and bright, with some sweet spices that aren't overpowering. Drink or hold.

Deep garnet. Expressive red fruits and candied flowers on the nose, along with allspice, vanilla and tobacco nuances. Lively and appealingly sweet, offering raspberry, cherry cola and candied rose flavors and a spicy nuance that emerges as the wine stretches out. Finishes sappy, penetrating and long, with smooth, even tannins that fold smoothly into the wine's vibrant red fruit.

The Eguren family have built up a formidable portfolio of vineyard and winery holdings. The properties stretch to Toro (where their Teso La Monja bodega is among, if not the best, of the region’s wineries) and La Mancha, where they produce a large amount of high-quality, ridiculously inexpensive wines under the Protocolo label. Laguardia, in Rioja Alavesa, is their ancestral home, where Sierra Cantabria been growing grapes and making wine for five generations going back to 1870. The bodega, which was established in 1957, tends to a modern style of winemaking, with fruit, often of the dark, ripe school, to the front and French and American oak usually playing equal roles in their impeccably maintained cellar. To my mind these are wines that combine the best of the modern and traditional schools of Rioja, especially when they have some age.

The Spanish winery Sierra Cantabria was founded in 1957 by Guillermo Eguren and is one of Hermanos Eguren's beautiful wineries. Sierra Cantabria is located in the Rioja in a unique location between the River Ebro and the Sierra Cantabria mountain range. The Sierra Cantabria Mountains (1200m.) And the River Ebro (350m.) Provide a special microclimate with Mediterranean and continental features - mild winters and mild summers, unique to wine growing.
On the other hand, the thermal summer jump (intense heat during the day with fresh night temperatures) increases the polyphenol content, which makes for excellent quality wines with a distinctive character.
The vineyards of Bodega Sierra Cantabria are mainly located in the towns of San Vicente de la Sonsierra, Labastida and Laguardia, an area very well known for wine growing.
The Tempranillo variety predominates, along with small amounts of Garnacha, Viura and 'Hairy Tempranillo', all of which are grown in vineyards about 35 years old, although there are also plots up to 70 years old.The harvest is carried out by hand every year, paying special attention to the rigorous selection of the grapes that are the soul of the wine, in optimal condition and in perfect ripening conditions. The careful harvest is followed by a thorough separation of the bunches, which is done on a selection table at the entrance of the winery. Winemaking is aimed at minimal intervention in the winery to fully respect the character of the terroir
