We are big fans of the entire Sierra Cantabria range, and our opinion is strongly supported by Penín and Robert Parker. Robert Parker Jr. writes about Sierra Cantabria : "An excellent and consistent producer of high-quality wines at realistic prices."
This Sierra Cantabria Blanco is an atypical white Rioja made from grapes permitted by the appellation, yet highly innovative. The first vintage was 2016, when they produced less. The first volume comes with the 2018 Blanco. The 2019 is now available and is a rather unusual blend of Sauvignon Blanc (30%), Viura (30%), Tempranillo Blanco (25%), Malvasía (10%), and Maturana (5%). It almost has a French feel. It is fermented and aged in stainless steel, with only the Sauvignon Blanc fermented and aged in (French) oak to give it texture and avoid excessive aromas. The Maturana has very high acidity, adding freshness. It's very different from your average white Rioja. The individual grapes remain on their lees and are only blended at the end, after which the wine also receives some bottle aging. The wine is fruity and floral, light and fresh, yet with added complexity and texture. Both on the nose and in the palate, it offers notes ranging from soft fruits like pear and mango to ripe citrus. The short oak aging also gives the wine pleasant notes of toasted bread to vanilla. A very complete wine with a wide range of flavors.
Sierra Cantabria embodies the essence of the Eguren family. Over 10 years ago, Marcos and Miguel Eguren created a white wine called "Organza," a reference to the light fabric adorning wedding dresses, which evokes its softness and delicacy. A similar reference exists for "Sierra Cantabria Otoman," which refers to a different type of silk, made from fabrics produced in Turkey. This fabric imparts the same vitality and freshness, while preserving the uniquely soft characteristics of the Sonsierra region, where the grapes for this wine are sourced.

The 2024 Sierra Cantabria Blanco is a blend of Viura, Tempranillo Blanco, Sauvignon Blanc, Malvasía and Maturana that macerated for 48 hours. Aromatic and expressive with citrus and herbal notes, the palate is textured, moderately fresh and ends with a burst of clear, fruity flavors.

This year, I visited the leading vineyards of San Vicente de la Sonsierra with Marcos Eguren, Sierra Cantabria’s oenologist and technical director. Gruff in manner, Eguren spoke with clear reverence and affection for sites like Mágico and La Veguilla, both of which yield parcel wines. His approach blends well-developed ripeness with extremely gentle extraction, resulting in a style with body and volume that never feels heavy or overly concentrated. Oak plays a prominent role but is handled with finesse, used to round out the wines rather than define them. Among the mid-size to large producers in the area, this is one that remains firmly grounded, likely because it’s still run by the sixth generation of the Eguren family. Also of note, their Toro wines, produced at Teso La Monja, are among the region’s most accomplished.

The Spanish winery Sierra Cantabria was founded in 1957 by Guillermo Eguren and is one of Hermanos Eguren's beautiful wineries. Sierra Cantabria is located in the Rioja in a unique location between the River Ebro and the Sierra Cantabria mountain range. The Sierra Cantabria Mountains (1200m.) And the River Ebro (350m.) Provide a special microclimate with Mediterranean and continental features - mild winters and mild summers, unique to wine growing.
On the other hand, the thermal summer jump (intense heat during the day with fresh night temperatures) increases the polyphenol content, which makes for excellent quality wines with a distinctive character.
The vineyards of Bodega Sierra Cantabria are mainly located in the towns of San Vicente de la Sonsierra, Labastida and Laguardia, an area very well known for wine growing.
The Tempranillo variety predominates, along with small amounts of Garnacha, Viura and 'Hairy Tempranillo', all of which are grown in vineyards about 35 years old, although there are also plots up to 70 years old.The harvest is carried out by hand every year, paying special attention to the rigorous selection of the grapes that are the soul of the wine, in optimal condition and in perfect ripening conditions. The careful harvest is followed by a thorough separation of the bunches, which is done on a selection table at the entrance of the winery. Winemaking is aimed at minimal intervention in the winery to fully respect the character of the terroir
