Omschrijving

Disgorged earlier this year, Selosse's latest NV Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Substance saw tirage in 2015 and, as usual, derives from a solera established in 1986. Unfurling in the glass with rich and complex aromas of dried fruits, orange zest, saffron, fenugreek, buttered toast and confit peach, it's full-bodied, ample and seamless, with a deep and layered core of fruit, racy acids and a long, resonant finish. As I've contended before, Substance is the cuvée that best exemplifies Selosse's contention (to paraphrase) that an oxidative élevage can purge a wine of the organic, leaving behind only the mineral—in this case, he argues, the imprint of two Avize lieux-dits, Les Chantereines and Les Marvillannes. For admirers of Selosse's wines, that makes it one of the most compelling bottlings in the portfolio, just as his detractors are likely to rank it as his most divisive.
One of the leading lights of a generation that changed Champagne, Anselme Selosse has now handed the reins to his son, Guillaume, who is ably presiding over this Avize reference point. In the vineyards, soils are cultivated mechanically and canopies hedged late and high, while yields are kept modest and an emphasis is placed on full physiological maturity. In the cellar, as I explained in an extensive profile in the July 2020 Week 1 issue of The Wine Advocate, lots of solids are retained in the musts for fermentation in barrel, with around one-third new oak (Cavin and François Frères are the leading coopers in the cellar), and topping up is minimal, meaning that the vins clairs sometimes exhibit some biologically aged and oxidative characteristics; though the move to a cooler cellar adjacent to the family's hotel and restaurant, Les Avisés, more or less coincidental with Guillaume's arrival on the scene, did something to temper, though not efface, this stylistic signature.

The NV (2010) Extra-Brut Substance is fabulous. Anselme and Guillaume Selosse craft a Champagne that is at once opulent and vibrant in Substance, which is made from a solera-style blend that goes back to 1986. That blend of vintages over time yields a Champagne with unreal textural and flavor complexity. There's just no other wine in Champagne like it. A hint of reduction adds character to the rich, honeyed Chardonnay fruit in a Substance that hits all the right notes. Disgorged: January 30, 2020.

I was blown away by these new releases from Anselme and Guillaume Selosse. The idea that wines show better when tasted at the domaine is simply not true. In fact, having an opportunity to follow these wines at my home in New York, far away from the bucolic hills of Avize and the surrounding towns of the Côte des Blancs, was such an enlightening experience, as I was able to see how the wines develop over time. The Initial, always the first wine in a tasting at Selosse, is just magnificent. It gets better from there, culminating with a collection of lieux-dits that are all truly epic. Readers will note that the current release of the Vintage Champagne is 2009 instead of 2008. Even after so many years, these remain some of the most unique and viscerally thrilling wines anywhere in the world.
