Perfecte wijn bestaat niet, of toch… Dit ware Rothschild-icoon krijgt consistent hoge beoordelingen van de internationale wijnpers, voor alle jaargangen. Almaviva bewijst dat perfectie bestaat.
"Far more satisfying than plenty of Bordeaux" schrijft Jancis Robinson over dit cultproject van de familie (Mouton) Rothschild en het iconische Concha y Toro.
De druiven voor Almaviva worden met de hand geplukt in de Puente Alto-wijngaard om in kleine kratjes naar de winery vervoerd te worden. Na het ontstelen vindt de selectie plaats, met zowel een laser als het menselijk oog zodat alleen de beste druiven overblijven. Deze worden zacht gekneusd en gaan slechts door middel van zwaartekracht de roestvrijstalen vaten in voor de vergisting. In totaal blijft de Almaviva – genoemd naar de held uit het toneelstuk Le Marriage de Figaro – zestien tot achttien maanden op op nieuw Frans eiken.
Het resultaat is niet te versmaden. Open, geurig, diep paars bijna zoet fruit, viooltjes, bloemen, vanille, chocola, complexiteit en verfijning. Typische Chileense eucalyptus. In de mond fluweelzacht maar met ruggengraat. Tannines als zacht cacaopoeder. Rijp zwoel fruit omsluit je smaakpapillen, zacht en romig met laurier, chocola, tabak en drop. Complex en zalig.

The 2023 Almaviva aromatically leads with its Carménère component in this vintage, featuring typical merkén spice notes blended with gravel dust, dried herbs and anise aromas, all set against a bright, red-fruited core. The palate is lush and velvety but supported by a lively, tensile spine, leading to a refined, sturdy finish that emphasizes lush fruit flavors, polished tannins and an oak-derived backdrop. This is a decidedly fruit-driven yet still elegant expression of Almaviva, and its one that will be accessible in its youth as more structured vintages continue to mature in the cellar. This blend of 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Carménère, 5% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot matured for 20 months in 73% new French oak.

Subtle cedar, tobacco, olives and paprika on the nose. Sweet berries and fruit on the palate, with a medium to full body and a long, nuanced finish. More precise in terms of tannins this year, with immediate approachability. 74% cabernet sauvignon, 19% carmenere, 5% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot. 73% new oak and the rest is second use. The 2023 Blend Almaviva is composed of 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Carménère, 5% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Sourced from a warm, dry vintage, this reflects the character of the year, though the winery has managed it with notable finesse. The nose delivers aromas of lavender, violet and blood orange, followed by hints of plum, blackberry and soft spices. Generous and juicy on the palate, this offers enveloping volume, fine-grained tannins and a fresh, sustained finish. Exceptionally well-crafted for the vintage, the 2023 once again secures its place among the top wines of Puente Alto.

A joint venture between Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Concha y Toro, Almaviva debuted in 1996. Located in Puente Alto, the estate focuses on Bordeaux varieties grown in gravelly soils to produce the flagship Almaviva and, since 2018, a second wine—Epu. French oenologist Michel Friou has overseen winemaking since 2007. Between 2020 and 2025, the domaine made a significant investment in vineyard replanting and facility expansion, including a new crushing area and a full-scale visitor center, complete with an underground tunnel connecting the winery to the estate house. The main vineyard changes involved replanting weakened Cabernet Sauvignon and upgrading irrigation systems. The last five years have aligned both vineyard and cellar to ensure a bold, ageworthy house style.

De naam Almaviva, hoewel het een Spaanse sonoriteit heeft, behoort tot de klassieke Franse literatuur: graaf Almaviva is de held van The Marriage of Figaro, het beroemde toneelstuk van Beaumarchais (1732-1799), later omgezet in een opera van het genie van Mozart. Het label is ondertussen een eerbetoon aan de voorouderlijke geschiedenis van Chili, met 3 reproducties van een gestyled ontwerp, dat de visie van de aarde en de kosmos in de Mapuche-beschaving symboliseert. Het label draagt de naam Almaviva in het eigen handschrift van Beaumarchais. Twee grote tradities slaan zo de handen ineen.
Het Château-concept werd in de 19e eeuw in Frankrijk geïntroduceerd als een manier om het creatieve meesterschap van wijnbouwers uit Bordeaux te eren. Almaviva was de eerste wijn in Chili die werd gecreëerd volgens dit Franse Château-concept, rekening houdend met een uitzonderlijk terroir, een unieke bodega en een technisch team die exclusief is toegewijd aan de productie van wijnen van ongeëvenaarde kwaliteit en excellentie.
