De Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley) is beauty. Wat een wijn. De wijn pronkt hij met een enorme rijkdom, kracht en diepte. Pluizig donker fruit, grind, gedroogde kruiden en specerijen. Goed bedeeld, met golven van licht verwarmde pruimensaus, bramenconserven en gesmolten zwarte drop omlijst door een noot van geroosterd appelhout. Aroma's van laurierblad voegen een aantrekkelijk bereik toe aan de gespierde afdronk. Geef het een paar jaar om het babyvet weg te laten smelten en dit is een indrukwekkende wijn die rond 2025/2026 al fraai op dronk is maar zeker 10-15 jaar kan kelderen. De Dunn Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is een 100% Cabernet Sauvignon welke 32 maanden heeft gerijpt in 100% nieuw Frans eiken.

The mountain really determined the style of the wine. It became obvious right away that the grapes up here were much more powerful than down on the valley floor. I just made the wine itself the same way we did at Caymus, it just was a more tannic wine due to the place.

Largely Howell Mountain-derived this vintage, Dunn's 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, with 22% of the volume coming from Coombsville. It has only 13.7% alcohol, yet it comes across as rather forward (for Dunn), with slightly liquorous notions of crème de cassis on the nose and a deceptively supple, silky finish. I wouldn't dare call a Dunn wine plush, but this comes close.
Changes have been slowly seeping into the fabric of Dunn Vineyards over the past couple of years. Randy Dunn is still around—I saw him cruising around on an ATV as I pulled up the driveway—but the family has brought in management from outside the family in the person of General Manager Lily Mirabelle Freedman, who previously worked at Colgin. Assistant Winemaker Ted Kizor has been promoted to winemaker and Alex Dunn—Mike Dunn's son—has joined the business to manage the vineyards, with a focus on regenerative farming. He's the third generation to join the family business on Howell Mountain.
On the crush pad, there's a new destemmer, the Trailer Vineyard (now renamed Alta Tierra) is being replanted, and the family has introduced a carbon sequestration plan aimed at making the farming carbon neutral. The vines in the JK Vineyard (about four acres) were removed this year in preparation for replanting in the future.
The wines remain superb representations of their Howell Mountain origins, lowered in alcohol through judicious use of technology in some vintages, and a cave whose high humidity results in the loss of about 0.5% alcohol over the course of 31 months of aging in barrel, but all of the updates to the business need to be paid for somehow, so expect prices to rise over the next several vintages.

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley) is a powerful, tannic wine. In some vintages, the Napa Valley bottling is quite accessible, but not here. Swaths of tannin wrap around a core of dark fruit, gravel, spice, dried flowers, lavender and charred earth are pushed forward, with firm, chocolatey tannins that wrap it all together. This brooding, potent Cabernet needs at least a few years to settle. The 2019 is a bruiser, that is for sure.
