Description
Château Rieussec belongs together with Château d'Yquem to the absolute top among the Sauternes wines. Rieussec has the status of 1st Grand Cru 1855. Rieussec is owned by Les Domaines Barons de Rothschild and is managed by Saskia Lafite. In addition to the well-known sweet dessert wine from Sauternes, they also make a very nice dry white wine. The R de Rieussec. Château Rieussec belongs to the best houses of Sauternes and is Premier Cru Classé classified.
Carmes de Rieussec is produced in the heart of the Sauternes appellation, on the left bank of the Garonne, about 50 km south of Bordeaux. The nearby Ciron river provides a unique natural humidity, which creates the ideal conditions for the development of Botrytis Cinerea – the noble rot characteristic of great Sauternes wines.
Carmes 2023 opens with aromas of candied apricot and citrus, refined by delicate floral notes. On the palate the same aromas return, perfectly balanced between opulent sweetness and fresh liveliness. The texture is particularly refined for a modern, fresh style of Sauternes. Without a doubt, this is an excellent Carmes in an impressive 2023 vintage.

Duck liver (or chicken liver) pate with brioche and onion compote
The sweetness and full structure of the Sauternes harmonise beautifully with the creamy pate and the soft sweetness of the compote.Blue cheese such as Roquefort with walnuts and honey
The salty intensity of blue cheese is a classic contrast to the rich, sweet style of the wine. Walnuts and honey add texture and extra depth.Apple pie with cinnamon and vanilla ice cream
The caramelized notes in the wine match seamlessly with the warm flavors of apple, cinnamon and creamy ice cream.Roasted pumpkin with goat cheese and thyme
The sweet notes of pumpkin and savoury cheese find a nice balance with the tropical fruit and botrytis complexity of the wine.Thai curry with coconut milk and shrimps
The soft spiciness and creaminess of the curry are softened and rounded out by the sweetness and freshness of the wine, making for a surprisingly balanced pairing.

Composed of 94% Semillon, 3% Sauvignon Blanc and 3% Muscadelle, the pale lemon-gold colored 2017 Carmes de Rieussec comes bounding out of the glass with rambunctious scents of candied citrus peel, pineapple tart, green mango and fresh apricots with hints of honeycomb, musk perfume and lime blossoms. The medium to full-bodied palate explodes with tropical and stone fruit flavors, offering seamless freshness and a long, honey-laced finish. Yum!

A pretty second wine of Rieussec with creamy, cooked pear and apple character. Some soufflé character, too. Medium body, medium sweet and a fresh finish.

From: 2017 Bordeaux – Mirror, Mirror on The Wall… (Mar 2020)
The 2017 Carmes de Rieussec is dazzling. Here, too, the winemaking team captured a striking balance of richness and energy. Most second wines from Sauternes these days are light and floral. The Carmes has plenty of those qualities, but it is far from an easygoing Sauternes; rather it packs a serious punch. Lemon confit, passion fruit, exotic flowers and mint meld into the creamy, resonant finish.

From: 2017 Bordeaux: The Heart of the Matter (May 2018)
Lemon confit, white flowers and mint are all laced throughout the 2017 Carmes de Rieussec. Fresh and light on its feet, with notable vibrancy, the Carmes hits all the right notes. The balance here is simply unreal, especially for a second wine. Picking a bit earlier and an increased emphasis in freshness is felt throughout the Rieussec range, but it is especially felt in the Carmes, a mid-weight, super-finessed wine that offers tons of depth while also staying light on its feet.
