Château Rieussec Sauternes

The 2022 Château Rieussec is a Sauternes classic, coming from one of the most renowned estates in the appellation. Situated next to the famous Château d'Yquem, the château boasts vineyards perfectly situated for the creation of noble rot, essential for the production of this sumptuous dessert wine.

2022 was a warm and sunny year in Bordeaux, with sufficient rain at the right moments. This resulted in grapes with a nice balance between concentration and freshness. The botrytis cinerea, the noble rot, developed optimally and produced a wine with impressive aromatic richness.

Grape varieties in the Rieussec

The blend consists mainly of Sémillon, supplemented with Sauvignon Blanc and a small percentage of Muscadelle. This combination produces a wine with depth, complexity and lively acidity that beautifully balances the rich character.

After manual picking in several rounds (tries) to select only the best botrytis-affected grapes, fermentation follows in oak barrels. The wine then matures for another 18 to 24 months in barriques, some of which are new, to add extra structure and complexity.

Taste profile of the 2022 Rieussec

In the glass, the Rieussec 2022 shows a deep golden color. The nose is intense, with notes of ripe apricot, candied orange, honey and subtle hints of vanilla and roasted almonds. In the mouth full and silky, with layers of tropical fruit, citrus and a fresh minerality. The finish is long, with a fine balance between sweetness and freshness.

WINE-FOOD SUGGESTIONS

  • Blue cheese such as Roquefort with walnuts and honey
The sweetness of the Sauternes provides a beautiful contrast to the salty, tangy flavours of the blue cheese, while the walnuts and honey add extra depth.

  • Duck liver pate with brioche
The rich, creamy texture of the foie gras is beautifully balanced by the fresh acidity and honeyed notes of the wine.

  • Apple tarte tatin
The caramelized apples and crispy dough of the tarte tatin match perfectly with the honey and apricot aromas of the Sauternes.

  • Grilled chicken with orange and ginger
The fresh acids of the wine balance the light fat of the chicken and go well with the sweet-fresh character of orange and ginger.

  • Baked scallops with a beurre blanc sauce
The soft, sweet taste of the scallops is enhanced by the creamy sauce, while the fresh acidity and rich flavors of the wine provide a nice counterbalance.
