Description
Château Rieussec, along with Château d'Yquem, ranks among the absolute top Sauternes wines. Rieussec holds the status of 1st Grand Cru 1855. Rieussec is owned by Les Domaines Barons de Rothschild. In addition to the well-known sweet dessert wine from Sauternes, they also produce a very fine dry white wine, the R de Rieussec.
The R de Rieussec 2024 is a refined dry white wine from the heart of the Sauternes, sourced from the prestigious Château Rieussec. This wine combines the best of Sauvignon Blanc (65%) and Sémillon (35%), resulting in an expressive, complex, and perfectly balanced Bordeaux Blanc.
Tasting notes:
On the nose, R de Rieussec opens with an elegant aroma of citrus fruits , white peach , and a subtle floral note . The oak aging adds a delicate complexity without being overpowering.
On the palate, you'll experience a round and pure attack , with a freshness that creates a lovely tension and length. The soft bitterness and a hint of salty minerality in the finish complete the whole, creating a wine that is both refined and vibrant.
Vinification:
The grapes are harvested by hand and carefully vinified, with some aged in new and used oak barrels and some in stainless steel tanks . This gives the wine a perfect balance of freshness, fruit, and subtle oak notes.
Wine and food pairings:
Grilled sea bass with lemon and fresh herbs
The salty minerality of the wine complements beautifully the freshness of the fish and the lemon accent.
Salad with goat cheese, peach and honey dressing
The citrus and peach aromas of the wine enhance the soft goat cheese and the sweet element of the honey.
Risotto with green asparagus and Parmesan cheese
The creaminess of the risotto is beautifully balanced by the fresh acidity of the wine, while the salty aftertaste perfectly complements the Parmesan.
Shrimp in garlic butter
The roundness and freshness of the wine cut beautifully through the fattiness of the butter and accentuate the seafood.
Chicken with tarragon cream sauce
The delicate spiciness of tarragon and the soft creaminess of the sauce complement the fresh and lightly wood-matured character of the wine.

Reimagined in a more vibrant style, in a Burgundy/Loire bottle, the 2021 R de Rieussec exhibits scents of citrus oil, gooseberry and botanicals, followed by a medium-bodied, bright and vibrant palate, with tangy acids and a nicely defined finish. It's an attractive middleweight that avoids the pungently varietal, heavily sulfitic caricatural style so prevalent in contemporary Bordeaux, while managing to reinvent what was historically a rather richer, more fruit-driven wine.
