Description
AND FIRST DELIVERY SPRING 2026
Discover the timeless beauty of Château Lafite Rothschild. On the legendary gravel plateaus of Lafite, the grapes thrive under the careful guidance of generations of winemakers, who cherish and pass on the traditions of winemaking.
Spread over 112 hectares, the vineyard embraces three areas steeped in history: the slopes around the château, the Carruades plateau to the west and a nearby parcel in Saint-Estèphe. Here, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot grow on a unique mix of gravel, sand and limestone. The 2023 is a blend of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot.
A symbol of heritage, the ancient Lafite cedar stands as a silent witness to the transmission of knowledge and passion from generation to generation. Planted almost 300 years ago, this cedar protected the château and its replacement, today’s Lafite cedar, continues this tradition.
The history of Château Lafite Rothschild is intertwined with the glorious terroir of Pauillac, shaped by centuries of alluvial deposits and blessed with an exceptional climate. A haven for biodiversity, Lafite embraces a sustainable future with a commitment to organic farming and biodiversity conservation.
For the wine, each grape is tasted individually before only the best are selected for the final blend. With a maturation of 15 months in new oak barrels, Château Lafite Rothschild reveals its signature elegance and complexity.

The finest of the first growths this year appears to be the 2023 Lafite Rothschild, a terrific effort that unwinds in the glass with deep and incipiently complex aromas of cassis, pencil shavings, lilac and violets mingled with hints of cigar wrapper and mint. Medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, it's vibrant and refined, with a deep core of fruit, plenty of sweet structuring tannin and a compelling marriage between energy and plenitude. It's a blend of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot that reminds me of 2019's tannins combined with 2016's unimpeachable classicism.

The purity of cabernet sauvignon is so evident here. It mesmerizes you with aromas of black and red currants, cedar, tobacco and bark. It's full-bodied yet there's very impressive weightlessness and agility, as well as subtlety and focus. Some iron and terra-cotta. Cedar and sandalwood undertones. Juicy and plummy at the end. 12.9% alcohol. 3.75 pH. A blend of 60% cabernet sauvignon and 40% merlot.

From: Bordeaux at the Crossroads: 2023 En Primeur (April 2024)
The 2023 Lafite-Rothschild races out of the glass with notable textural intensity. Explosive and deep, with striking balance, Lafite dazzles in this vintage. The 2023 is a somber, virile Lafite endowed with remarkable depth and tons of sheer character. Plum, blackberry, gravel, pencil shavings, graphite, mocha and lavender build into the intense, palate-staining finish. The blend is 93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot.

From: The Dalmatian Vintage: Bordeaux 2023 (Apr 2024)
The 2023 Lafite-Rothschild was picked September 7 to 29 at 45hL/ha and matured in 90% new oak. This is more discrete on the nose—one of the tropes of this First Growth—even when compared to the more immediate Carruades. This takes time to unfurl in the glass, slowly revealing black fruit laced with pencil box and just a touch of pressed violet. There’s wonderful precision here. The palate is medium-bodied with a cashmere texture, very pure (again) with a judicious dab of cracked black pepper. The finish is very sleek, thanks to its almost filigree tannins, seeming to glide across the palate. It's not a grippy or sinewy Pauillac, and on reflection, it is technically perfect. Yet, I find myself searching for a bit more…soul. Perhaps a few rough edges would captivate the emotions. This is a delicious Lafite-Rothschild no doubt, but I want it to move me once in bottle. Maybe it will.
- By Neal Martin on April 2024
Instead of this First Growth, which is undergoing major renovation work, this year, the primeur tasting was held at Duhart-Milon in the heart of Pauillac town. The last time I was at Lafite-Rothschild, I was with Charles Chevalier, which will give you an idea of how long ago that was. All I vaguely remember is that it was quite dark, though this has been spruced up with a picturesque garden and pond, a tranquil oasis just off the quayside. Eric Kohler discussed the vintage with me. “The key to the vintage was the water because it was a very hot vintage. Thanks to the regular rain, the vines continued their cycle, almost too much at times. We had around 320mm between April and September, and because it was hot, water was necessary. August was not quite as warm, and that is why we have such freshness. The heat wave was a good thing because we might have suffered a lack of concentration without it. September was very hot and the harvest took place under good conditions. For me, it is a charming vintage that reminds me of 2019, though that was not quite as fresh as 2023. Perhaps there is a bit of 2016 or 2020, too? Certainly, it is more classic in style than 2018.”

The vineyard of Château Lafite Rothschild consists of three main areas: The slopes around the Château, the Carruades plateau to the west and a 4.5 hectare site in Saint-Estèphe. Its area is 112 hectares. The soil consists of fine, deeply ground mixed with windblown sand on a well-drained and well-incorporated tertiary limestone subsoil. The grape varieties grown here are Cabernet-Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
Here the first stones were laid, the winegrowers' houses were built and prepared for something unusual to happen. As the years passed, the house overlooking this hill got bigger and a wisteria vine climbed the walls of generations of families to see how preserving this ecosystem has always been the ultimate priority. 150 years ago, Baroness Betty, wife of Baron James, planted the huge oak trees that separate our vineyard from the marshes. They, their children and grandchildren, the families of winegrowers die with them, work conscientiously to protect this impeccable creation that has been bequeathed to nature. They have taken great care to preserve this microcosm of forests and marshes, flora and fauna amidst the vines of Château Lafite Rothschild thrive in this almost wild osmosis.
As the ultimate witness to this protected land, some of the vines still gracefully show off their 140 years of ungrafted life. They escaped the phylloxera which, however, spared no one else! This infallible part of the vines continues to elude the winegrowers, the same ones who form, protect and nurture it, from one harvest year to the next, trying to refine this perfect composition that amazes them time and time again. It may not be a coincidence, of course, that Lafite earned the title of "First of the First" at Napoleon III's World's Fair. Nor will it be a coincidence, if others will speak of it long after us… Each barrel is tasted individually and only the best is selected for the final blend. After blending, the wine matures for 15 months in new oak barrels. Fermentation takes place for 15 days at a controlled temperature of 18°C. Only vines older than 10 years are used for the Grand Vin Château Lafite Rothschild. While each vintage is unique, there is usually a large portion of Cabernet Sauvignon, then Merlot, with a small contribution of Petit Verdot.
