Description
Sustainability is central to the Eguren family. The vineyards have been cultivated according to organic viticulture principles for more than thirty years. Chemical pesticides have not been used for a long time. The vineyards of Sierra Cantabria are protected from the cold northern winds by the eponymous Sierra Cantabria mountain range. The vineyard locations differ from each other in altitude, soil composition, location and age of the vines. They all benefit from the confluence of Atlantic and Mediterranean climate influences. Each vineyard therefore has its own character and it is these different character (terroir) properties that the Eguren family wants to reflect in the wines.
The Organza from Sierra Cantabria is a blend of Viura, Malvasia & Garnacha Blanca grapes and comes from the old vineyard San Vicente de la Sonsierra. After manual harvest, the grapes are cold macerated for 12 hours to extract extra flavour and aroma from the grapes. Fermentation takes place in new French oak barrels. Followed by maturation in barrel for 9 months and battonage (stirring the dead yeast cells for extra body and volume) twice a week during the first 6 months.
This is a beautiful refined white Rioja with beautiful refined oak and a delicious butterscotch. White fruits in the nose and in the mouth a good acidity and again beautiful fruit tones with refined oak and vanilla. This is a very beautiful elegant white wine of which only between 6 and 9 thousand bottles are made annually. In the tab: Attachment you will find the official fact sheet of this beautiful white Rioja.
P arker ends his review (92/100) with: "........Quite impressive"
Sierra Cantabria embodies the essence of the Eguren family . More than 10 years ago, Marcos and Miguel Eguren created a white wine called "Organza," referring to the light fabric that adorns wedding dresses, which indicates its softness and delicacy. A similar reference is made to "Sierra Cantabria Otoman" which refers to another type of silk, made from fabrics produced in Turkey. This fabric gives the same vitality and freshness, while maintaining the unique soft characteristics of the Sonsierra area, where the grapes for this wine come from.

The white 2022 Organza was fermented in (mostly) new French oak barrels, where it matured for 11 months. It's a blend of 40% Viura, 35% MalvasÃa Riojana and 25% Garnacha Blanca, with 12.9% alcohol and a pH of 3.21. The wine has little aromatic impact from the oak, and when I inquired, they explained that they used some 20% new barrels and had also started with some 500-liter barrels. So, the wine is more fruit driven and has notes of fennel. With moderate alcohol and notable acidity (the plants got blocked and didn't develop much alcohol or burned too much acidity), it's more floral and has a gentler palate with vibrant flavors and a chalky sensation in the finish. Quite impressive. 15,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in September 2023.

Such an intense, minerally and focused nose of iodine, yellow blossom and citrus character. Limes, star fruit, green apples and sour cream. Bright and textured, with a medium to full body and a long, minerally finish. Very gastronomic. Viura, malvasia and garnacha blanca. Barrel fermented. A great-value pick. Drink or hold.

The 2021 Organza blends 45% Viura, 30% Garnacha Blanca and 25% MalvasÃa Riojana sourced from San Vicente de la Sonsierra. Fermented and aged for 11 months in new French oak, this yellow-golden wine unfolds peach and pineapple notes, complemented by hints of vanilla and hazelnut. Dry, creamy and refreshing, this taut white lingers long with a vibrant core and a chalky texture.

Siblings Miguel and Marcos Eguren are fifth-generation vintners in Rioja Alavesa. Marcos is a talented oenologist who started out in 1976. In 1991, he caused a stir when he started making modern wines with grapes from old Rioja vines. He named the wine after the vineyard: San Vicente. This marked the beginning of a series of projects that would make Sierra Cantabria, the winery and headquarters, one of the landmarks of modern Rioja. A magnificent new winery in San Vicente de la Sonsierra is on the cusp of completion, with extensive underground caves where each parcel will be processed in accordance with its style and place. Apart from these moves toward consolidation, the fuel for the enterprise’s vigor springs from its vineyards. This was clear when Marcos took me to see his old vines in La Canoca, Vardallo (planted in 1904) and the vineyards of Páganos. In all, the brothers run three wineries in Rioja: Cantabria, Páganos and San Vicente, in addition to Teso La Monja in Toro. With a finely-tuned approach to Tempranillo, the Egurens bring out each terroir's energy, power and nuance.

The Spanish winery Sierra Cantabria was founded in 1957 by Guillermo Eguren and is one of Hermanos Eguren's beautiful wineries. Sierra Cantabria is located in the Rioja in a unique location between the River Ebro and the Sierra Cantabria mountain range. The Sierra Cantabria Mountains (1200m.) And the River Ebro (350m.) Provide a special microclimate with Mediterranean and continental features - mild winters and mild summers, unique to wine growing.
On the other hand, the thermal summer jump (intense heat during the day with fresh night temperatures) increases the polyphenol content, which makes for excellent quality wines with a distinctive character.
The vineyards of Bodega Sierra Cantabria are mainly located in the towns of San Vicente de la Sonsierra, Labastida and Laguardia, an area very well known for wine growing.
The Tempranillo variety predominates, along with small amounts of Garnacha, Viura and 'Hairy Tempranillo', all of which are grown in vineyards about 35 years old, although there are also plots up to 70 years old.The harvest is carried out by hand every year, paying special attention to the rigorous selection of the grapes that are the soul of the wine, in optimal condition and in perfect ripening conditions. The careful harvest is followed by a thorough separation of the bunches, which is done on a selection table at the entrance of the winery. Winemaking is aimed at minimal intervention in the winery to fully respect the character of the terroir
