Château Calon Ségur is one of Saint-Estèphe's historic icons, known for its heart-shaped label and classic signature. Region and year 2022

Saint-Estèphe enjoyed a warm and dry growing season in 2022, producing optimal ripeness and healthy grapes. Thanks to the clay-rich soils, sufficient moisture remained available to the vines, resulting in concentrated yet balanced wines. In this powerful vintage, Calon Ségur combined its classic structure with remarkable precision.

Vineyards and grape varieties

The vineyards are situated on a unique terroir of deep gravel layers with clay subsoils, which contributes to both strength and freshness. Cabernet Sauvignon forms the largest portion of the blend, supplemented by Merlot and smaller percentages of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. This composition gives the wine its characteristic tannic structure and longevity.

Vinification and maturation

After rigorous selection, the grapes are vinified plot by plot to maintain maximum precision. Maturation takes place in French oak barriques, a significant portion of which are new, to support structure and refinement without dominating the fruit. In 2022, this yields a wine with impressive concentration and classic structure.

Color, smell and taste

Deep ruby red in color. The nose reveals notes of red berries, crème de cassis, and subtle spice with hints of nutmeg and cloves.

The palate is full and polished, with juicy fruit and a core of blackcurrant and red fruit. The tannins are fine yet distinct, providing length and focus. The structure is serious and traditional for Calon Ségur, with a long, layered finish. Still somewhat closed at the moment, but clearly poised for further development.

Drinking window and development

With a 95-96 point rating, the 2022 is among the château's strongest recent vintages. The combination of ripe fruit, firm yet refined tannins, and fresh acidity points to excellent aging potential. The wine is expected to fully open up from around 2028 onwards and continue to evolve for decades to come.
