Château Pontet-Canet is one of the most progressive Grand Cru Classé houses in Pauillac. Under the leadership of Alfred Tesseron, the estate has developed into a benchmark for biodynamic viticulture in Bordeaux. The focus is on a vibrant vineyard and minimal intervention in the cellar. This results in wines with a clear identity and a strong expression of terroir. Pontet-Canet is known for its combination of power and refinement, with a style that has become increasingly precise and elegant in recent years. You can find more information about this winery in the Winery tab.
Origin and terroir
The vineyards in Pauillac are situated on classic gravel soils that provide structure and drainage. The 2025 growing season began with a wet period, followed by an exceptionally dry and warm phase. These conditions resulted in rapid grape development, but thanks to experience and adjustments in the vineyard, the balance was maintained. The grapes ripened under relatively cool conditions in the shade of the canopy, which contributed to freshness and aromatic precision.
Grapes and vineyard management
The blend consists of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot. The harvest began early with Merlot in early September and continued until the end of September for the later varieties. Despite the challenging conditions, the quality of the fruit remained high, with healthy grapes and thick skins that ensured concentration and structure. The biodynamic approach plays an important role in maintaining balance in the vineyard.
Vinification and aging
In the cellar, work was carried out with maximum precision and minimal intervention. Extraction was deliberately kept limited to preserve finesse. The wine ferments with natural yeasts and is aged in a combination of new oak barrels, used barriques, and concrete amphoras. This approach ensures structure and complexity without overpowering the fruit, and contributes to the wine's soft texture and refinement.
Color, smell and taste
The wine has a deep, intense color. On the nose, aromas of red and purple fruit, floral notes such as lavender and rose petals, and a subtle spiciness come to the fore. On the palate, the wine is remarkably silky and precise, with polished tannins that provide a soft and elegant structure. The taste is layered and refined, with a beautiful balance between freshness and ripeness. The finish is long, harmonious, and slightly saline, leaving a lasting impression of finesse.
Style and character
The 2025 Pontet-Canet distinguishes itself through its refinement and balance. Where earlier vintages sometimes placed more emphasis on power, the focus here is clearly on elegance and precision. The wine is medium-bodied yet intense, with a soft and almost velvety texture. Critics such as James Suckling highlight the perfect integration of fruit and tannins and the seductive, soft texture, while Antonio Galloni of Vinous underscores the wine's finesse, aromatic complexity, and pure elegance.
Volume
The 2025 vintage is seen as a year of extremes that was managed exceptionally well. Despite drought and heat, the Pontet-Canet team managed to produce a wine with balance and energy. Reviews confirm this picture, with scores of 97-98 points from James Suckling and 96-98+ from Vinous. The wine is praised for its refinement, silky texture, and aromatic precision. The drinking window is estimated to extend from 2033 well into the future, indicating significant aging potential.

A precise and beautiful wine with total integration of the fruit and polished tannins that give a caressing and seductive mouthfeel. It’s medium-bodied with lovely fruit, a gentle nature and an overall softness and gorgeousness. Yet structured.

From: 2025 Bordeaux En Primeur: Le Freak (Apr 2026)
The 2025 Pontet-Canet is a wine of exquisite class. Silky, aromatic and vibrant, the 2025 is all finesse. Crushed red/purplish fruit, lavender, rose petal and a gentle hint of spice are all wonderfully knit together. Pontet-Canet is one of the more refined, sublimely beautiful wines of the year. This could turn out even better than my note suggests. Tasted two times.

“…this delivers a finessed, slim-style of Pauillac, with plenty of ageing potential and quiet confidence. One of the successes of the vintage.” – 94 punten, Jane Anson
“Dark purple colour with violet hue and almost black core. Rich nose with opulent character, ripe blackcurrants, blackberry jam, sweet plums, hints of dark chocolate, elegant toasting, balmy spices and hints of liquorice. On the palate well-structured with firm yet ripe tannins, quite full-bodied with very good length, well balanced with good depth. A style and concentration different to the previous vintages”. Markus Del Monego 96/100

Pontet-Canet is a wine producer based in Pauillac, Bordeaux. The estate is known for its high quality red wines, made mainly from Cabernet Sauvignon, and is classified as a fifth growth (Cinquième Cru) in the official Bordeaux wine classification of 1855.
History of Pontet-Canet
The history of Pontet-Canet dates back to the early 18th century, when the estate was founded. In 1705, the vineyard was founded by Jean-François de Pontet, an important figure in the Bordeaux wine industry. He expanded the vineyard and built a castle, from which the estate takes its name. At the end of the 18th century, the property came into the hands of the Canet family and became known as 'Château Pontet-Canet'. The Canet family was instrumental in developing the estate's vineyards and winemaking practices. In 1855, when Emperor Napoleon III ordered the classification of Bordeaux wines for the Exposition Universelle de Paris, Pontet-Canet was classified as a fifth grow (Cinquième Cru) in the official Bordeaux wine classification of 1855. This classification recognized the historical reputation of the estate and the quality of its wines. In the 20th century, the Cruse family, wine merchants from Bordeaux, acquired Pontet-Canet. The Cruse family has made significant improvements to the estate and winemaking processes. In the mid-2000s, Pontet-Canet underwent a remarkable transformation. The estate, led by owner Alfred Tesseron (later owner of Tesseron Estate), embraced biodynamic farming practices. This marked a major shift towards organic and sustainable viticulture, avoiding synthetic chemicals and emphasizing the holistic relationship between the vineyard, the soil and the environment.
Terroir of Pontet-Canet
Pontet-Canet's vineyards cover approximately 81 hectares (200 acres) of prime Pauillac terroir. The vineyard is planted with a high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon (usually around 65-70%), as well as Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
Production of Pontet-Canet
The winemaking process at Pontet-Canet involves a combination of traditional and modern techniques. The grapes are harvested and sorted by hand, with fermentation taking place in temperature-controlled wooden barrels. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels, usually for 16 to 20 months, depending on the vintage. Pontet-Canet wines are known for their deep color, concentrated fruit flavors and a structure that allows them to age gracefully. They often exhibit a balance between power and elegance, with fine tannins and complex aromas. It is believed that the estate's commitment to biodynamic farming has contributed to the purity and expression of the terroir in their wines.
