Description
Markus Molitor and the unique location of Bernkasteler Lay
Weingut Markus Molitor is a benchmark in the Mosel region, known for its uncompromising approach and wines that express the pure essence of terroir and grape. The Bernkasteler Lay vineyard is located directly behind the town of Bernkastel and is characterized by steep slopes of weathered blue slate. This terroir produces Rieslings with precise structure, vibrant acidity, and remarkable finesse.
The riverside location ensures optimal sun reflection and a long growing season. This allows the grapes to develop a perfect balance of ripeness, freshness, and complexity – essential for wines with excellent aging potential.
Selection and vinification of the Auslese ** White Capsule
The grapes for this wine come from old vines that are harvested by hand. Markus Molitor applies a rigorous selection process: only perfectly ripe, healthy bunches are used. Vinification takes place through spontaneous fermentation in large wooden vats. Maturation on fine lees lasts eight to ten months, adding texture and complexity.
The term "White Capsule" indicates a dry style of Riesling. For Molitor, this means maximum precision, crystal-clear acidity, and expressive minerality, without any residual sweetness.
Robert Parker's Review – The Wine Advocate
Stephan Reinhardt awarded this wine 98 points , calling it a wine of "transcendent" quality. The nose is intense and concentrated, yet fresh and clear, without tropical fruit. On the palate, the wine is rich, crystalline, and extremely mineral, with electric acidity that lifts it to great heights. The finish is so pure, juicy, and precise that you can barely put it down. Reinhardt calls it a wine that "continues to orbit the earth like a satellite." Recommended for drinking: 2030–2070 .
Smell, colour and flavour profile
In the glass, the wine displays a brilliant straw yellow color. The aroma is complex and layered, with notes of lime, white blossom, slate, and subtle spices. On the palate, it is taut and muscular, with vibrant acidity that lifts the rich structure. The palate combines citrus, saltiness, delicate bitters, and stone fruit into an intensely dry yet incredibly elegant composition. The finish is endless, with an ethereal character.
Serving tips and aging potential
This wine deserves a generous glass and patience. Serve at around 9°C. While already impressive, it will reach its full potential starting in 2030 and will continue to develop for many decades to come. The wine will transform with tertiary aromas such as honey, smoke, and dried herbs.

The 2020 Riesling Bernkasteler Lay Auslese ** (White Capsule) is pure, refined and fresh on the precise and concentrated but bright and shining, transcendental nose that is intense and ripe but doesn't show any tropical fruit aromas. Crystalline, highly refined and saline on the palate, this is a rich and very intense Riesling whose electric acidity takes all the weight and concentration up a steep flight to heaven, where the wine flies possibly forever like a satellite around the globe. The finish is so juicy, so saline and so precise that one can't leave the glass without a sense of wonder. So much finesse and intensity in one glass? 12% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine from AP 50 21 in July 2022.
