Description
In the early 1980s Philippine de Rothschild decided to plant a few hectares of the vineyard with white grape varieties. The sandy, gravelly soil is planted with Sauvignon Blanc (55%) & Semillon (45%) at a density of 9,000 vines per hectare to encourage competition between the vines. 50% of the wine is aged in new oak barrels. Rich, complex and elegant, the Mouton Rothschild Aile d'Argent, despite being produced in very limited quantities, has quickly become a benchmark for lovers of fine white Bordeaux wines.
Aile d'Argent is the title of a children's story that father Baron Philippe de Rothschild read to his children. It was a kind of self-invented fairy tale about the flying teapot. The teapot was called Aile d'Argent, Silver Wing. When the war broke out, Philippe de Rothschild was arrested (because of his Jewish background). In prison he wrote the story Aile d'Argent la Magique (Magical Silver Wing) from memory and it was published by Gallimard in 1947. This full bodied Aile d'Argent has aromas and flavors of dried mango, fresh pineapple and lemon. Full and ripe, but framed by a bright beautiful acidity. Spicy and lively with a long, intense finish. Exciting. The 2020 is a blend of 52% Sauvignon Blanc, 14% Sauvignon Gris and 34% Sémillon.

Composed of 52% Sauvignon Blanc, 14% Sauvignon Gris and 34% Sémillon, the 2020 Aile d'Argent has no Muscadelle this year, no skin contact and no malolactic. It sails out of the glass with fabulously flamboyant notes of fresh pineapple, nectarines and jasmine, plus suggestions of key lime pie, passion fruit and orange zest. The medium to full-bodied palate delivers opulent tropical and citrus fruit layers, supported by plenty of freshness and a decadent touch of oiliness to the texture, finishing long and impactful. So hard to resist even at this nascent stage, I can't wait to see how this is going to age!
“The vintage went quite well—not as extreme as 2018,” said Jean-Emmanuel Danjoy, the new estates manager, formerly the winemaking director at Clerc Milon, now overseeing winemaking for Mouton Rothschild, Clerc Milon and d’Armailhac, following the retirement of Philippe Dhallhuin last year. “There was no excessive heat, no sunburn damage, no blockage on the vines. It was an extremely early vintage, but, because of the earlier budbreak, it was also a long growing season—180 days. Usually, it is around 178 days.”
I asked Danjoy about the slightly lower alcohols this year, given the overall heat of the vintage. “I don’t know why—the sugars never went up toward the end. The vines appeared fine. The tannins were getting more and more polished. We also don’t have really high acidity.”
As for the styles of the 2020’s, Danjoy commented, “We have cool wines from a hot vintage. There was no heat spell just before the harvest—no cause for jamminess.”
Philippe Sereys de Rothschild, chairman and CEO of Baron Philippe de Rothschild, commented, “This vintage is freshest compared to the other two (2018 and 2019). And there is a great complexity of tannins. What’s happening in the barrels with the wines—there is a multilayered, complexity to the tannins. These wines handle the barrels—they are like an oxygen sink. Usually, it's the more structured vintages that behave like this. It’s incredible.”
The grand vin at Mouton was something of an enigma for me during my tastings. It seemed to have more mid-palate density and layers than many other Pauillacs, and with a touch more tension too (from acid concentration as opposed to dilution). Then I remembered those deep, deep gravels on the Mouton plateau at the heart of the vineyard. While these free-draining gravels can force Mouton’s vines to really struggle in very dry, warmer vintages (such as 2018), no doubt they will have offered a distinct advantage during the period of heavy rains in mid-August and the rains toward the end of harvest. Chalk one up for terroir!

The 2020 Aile d'Argent is terrific. Aromatic and vibrant, it possesses terrific energy and a bit more verve than in the past. The blocked malo style works especially well in this vintage. The Sauvignon Blanc is quite expressive, especially in the wine's aromatic profile.

From: Vingt-Vingt Vins: Bordeaux 2020 (May 2021)
The 2020 Aile d’Argent was picked early, from August 24, to keep the acidity, with no skin contact and no malolactics in the final blend. The winemaking team used all the Sauvignon Gris to obtain richness, and the wine will be bottled in early June. It has an alluring, perfumed bouquet of honeysuckle, orange pith and lime scents, very well defined and the oak skillfully integrated. The palate is smooth in texture, displaying just the right amount of bitterness to lend edge on the entry, and quite tangy compared to recent vintages, featuring lime, melon and gooseberry notes, touches of lemongrass coming through toward the finish. Delicious.

Château Mouton Rothschild is an icon of Pauillac. This legendary estate combines a rich history, unique terroir, and wines that belong to the very top worldwide. A name that fascinates wine lovers and collectors generation after generation.
History of Château Mouton Rothschild
In 1853, Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild bought the Château Brane-Mouton estate in Pauillac and renamed it Château Mouton Rothschild. His aim was to serve his own wine to his distinguished guests. In 1922, his great-grandson Philippe de Rothschild took over. Two years later, he decided that all wines should be bottled at the château itself — a revolutionary move in Bordeaux at the time. In 1973, Château Mouton Rothschild was officially promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classé, the only change ever made to the famous 1855 classification.
Later, Baroness Philippine de Rothschild took the helm. She modernized the estate and in 1962 opened a museum on the property. After her passing in 2014, the château came under the leadership of her children Camille, Philippe Sereys de Rothschild, and Julien de Beaumarchais, keeping it very much a family affair.
Location and terroir in Pauillac
Château Mouton Rothschild is located in Pauillac, at the heart of the Médoc, close to the Gironde estuary. The vineyards benefit from the mild maritime climate and the protection of the nearby Les Landes forest. The soil is made up of gravel over layers of clay and limestone. This unique combination delivers powerful yet elegant wines with great ageing potential.
Pauillac itself is one of Bordeaux’s most prestigious appellations. The village is home to three Premier Grands Crus Classés: Château Latour, Château Lafite Rothschild, and of course Château Mouton Rothschild.
Grapes and winemaking at Château Mouton Rothschild
The estate covers about 90 hectares of vineyards. Plantings are dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, which makes up more than eighty percent. Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and a small portion of Petit Verdot complete the blend. Together they provide wines with depth, structure, and complexity.
The grapes are hand-harvested and carefully selected. In the impressive cellars, they are vinified in modern oak vats, with each parcel treated separately. This ensures that the character of each plot can fully express itself in the final wine.
Special wines from the estate
Alongside the Grand Vin, the château also produces a second wine: Le Petit Mouton. Made from younger vines, it is approachable earlier in its life. There is also a white wine, Aile d’Argent, crafted from Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, Sauvignon Gris, and a touch of Muscadelle. Fresh, aromatic, and released only in small quantities.
Another signature of Château Mouton Rothschild is the label art. Since 1945, a world-renowned artist has been commissioned each year to design a unique label. Names such as Picasso, Miró, and Warhol have all contributed, making these bottles true collector’s items.
Key facts to remember
- Château Mouton Rothschild is the only estate ever promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classé.
- The estate houses its own wine museum, celebrating the link between wine and art.
- The second wine Le Petit Mouton and the white Aile d’Argent are highly sought after by enthusiasts.
- The iconic labels are redesigned each year by major artists and are famous worldwide.
