Description
The Valenciso Reserva is a 100% pure Tempranillo from the chalky soils around Haro in the Rioja Alta. At Compañía Bodeguera de Valenciso, quality is deliberately chosen over quantity, so aggressive pruning takes place (yield only 38hl per hectare). This unique project in Rioja Alta initially had only one goal; making one wine from only Tempranillo and then bringing an excellent Rioja Reserva to the market. This vintage is characterized by a very long maturation. Even the malolactic fermentation lasted until after the summer following the harvest. The wine has been matured for 17 months in French oak barrels, a third of which are new oak. The wine has subtle and elegant notes of red and black fruit, cedar, nutmeg and vanilla. The characteristic that stands out most here is the balance, something that Valenciso is very good at. nl producing classically proportioned wines with the right amount of fruit, acidity and wood. This is a wine that can only get better over the next 10 years.
FACT: The wine is in our conditioned Wine Warehouse and if you come to pick up the wine you will often also receive a nice discount . The combination of ripe fruit, fresh acids and soft tannins makes this wine versatile in combination with food.
1. Grilled entrecote with roasted vegetables
The juicy and full character of the entrecote fits well with the structure of the wine, while the roasted flavors of the vegetables harmonize with the wood-matured and earthy notes in the wine. The tannins are softened by the fat in the meat, which makes the wine feel beautifully round and supple.
2. Leg of lamb with garlic, rosemary and thyme
Lamb has a spicy, slightly gamey flavour that goes well with the ripe fruit and spiciness of Tempranillo. The Provencal herbs accentuate the elegant wood tones and subtle leather in the wine, creating a harmonious whole.
3. Mushroom risotto with Parmesan cheese
The earthy tones of the mushrooms complement the complex, ripe aromas of the wine. The creamy texture of the risotto is nicely balanced by the acidity in the wine, while the Parmesan cheese adds depth.
4. Beef stew with carrot and bay leaf
Slow-cooked beef develops a rich flavor that complements the ripe fruit tones and soft tannins of the wine. Bay leaf and carrot add extra spice and sweetness, enhancing the complexity of the wine.
5. Manchego or other matured hard cheeses
Hard sheep cheeses like Manchego bring salty, nutty flavors that go well with the mature notes in the wine. The structure of the cheese matches the full mouthfeel of the Reserva, without overpowering the wine.

The balanced, young and elegant 2016 Reserva mixes characteristics from classical and more modern Rioja reds, fruit and herbs, spicy oak and some complexity and a medium-bodied palate with very good freshness and fine tannins. It's riper than you think at 14.5% alcohol and has a pH of 3.7. It fermented in concrete and matured in French barrels for 18 months. 100,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in autumn 2020.
Luis Valentín and Carmen Enciso are Valenciso, which is a combination of both of their last names. They have farmed their 31 hectares of vines organically since 2017, but their wines do not carry certification. They produce some 150,000 bottles that age in 1,500 barriques. They are one of the modern-classical or classical-modern Rioja producers.

Ripe, racy aromas of dark plums, cherries, dark earth, walnut husks, dark mushrooms and graphite. Restrained and rather understated in style, with a medium body evenly packed with juicy fruit and fine-grained tannins. Firm and pretty long in the finish. Drink or hold.

From: The Whites of Rueda Get Serious (Feb 2024)
The 2016 Reserva is 100% Tempranillo sourced from the Ollauri-Haro area in Rioja, having undergone an 18-month aging process in French oak barrels. Garnet in color, it reveals balsamic notes, complemented by blackberry and strawberry aromas against an oaky backdrop. Indulgent and ample, it features fine-grained tannins, offering a flavorful red wine experience and a lingering fruity finish. This is a well-calibrated expression of Rioja.

Winemakers with over 25 years of experience in La Rioja. In 1998 they revived an old winery and gave it the name Valenciso which is a combination of the two surnames (Valentin and Enciso). The vineyards and bodega are located in Ollauri, 4 km from Haro in the north of La Rioja Alta. An area that differs from the rest of the Rioja by a climate with Atlantic influences and Mediterranean heat. The vineyards are located on a clay-calcareous terroir, so ideal for growing grapes. Compañía Bodeguera de Valenciso works on a small scale and authentic with a lot of passion. The wine continues to receive international high ratings with 90+ ratings from Penin and Parker.
