Valentin and Enciso have over 33 years of experience and background in Rioja, and by combining their first names, the name Valenciso was born. Founded in 1998, Valenciso is located in Ollauri, just 4 km from Haro in the heart of Rioja Alta. Valenciso aims to express the elegance and delicacy of Northern Tempranillo and focuses on producing premium, unique, and elegant Tempranillos. Valenciso differentiates itself by integrating organic and biodynamic practices in the vineyard, fermenting in concrete vats, and aging the wine exclusively in French oak barrels.
The Valenciso Reserva 10 Years (Anos Despues) is a 100% pure Tempranillo from the chalky soils around Haro in the Rioja Alta. Compañía Bodeguera de Valenciso deliberately chooses quality over quantity, so aggressive pruning is used (yields only 38hl per hectare). This unique project in the Rioja Alta initially had a single goal: to make a single wine from Tempranillo and then release an excellent Rioja Reserva. The grapes are harvested by hand. The wine is bottled only 10 years after the harvest. Fermentation lasts for 60 months in concrete vats. Maturation lasts for 40 months in wooden barrels, for a total of 10 years, which also explains the title of this unique Rioja. This 2015 vintage will not be available until the end of 2025.

I retasted the 2014 10 Años Después that I already tasted last year. I found notes of fountain pen ink, earth and licorice, spices and smoke from the 36 months it spent in Caucasian oak barrels and the further 14 months in French barriques. 2014 was not an easy vintage in Rioja, and the wine might have been a little too weak for the oak treatment. It's ripe at 14.5% alcohol and has mellow acidity. 5,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2022.
Valenciso was sold in December 2024 to the Iberian group who also have wineries in Ribera del Duero and Priorat, but Luis Valentín and Carmen Enciso, who created the company back in 1998, continue providing their know-how. They have 31 hectares of organically farmed vines (since 2017) and produce 150,000 bottles.

The vineyards and bodega are located in Ollauri, 4 km from Haro in the north of La Rioja Alta. An area that differs from the rest of the Rioja by a climate with Atlantic influences and Mediterranean heat. The vineyards are located on a clay-calcareous terroir, so ideal for growing grapes. Compañía Bodeguera de Valenciso works on a small scale and authentic with a lot of passion. The wine continues to receive international high ratings with 90+ ratings from Penin and Parker.
