Description
Screaming Eagle Winery
Founded in the early 1990s in Oakville, Napa Valley, Screaming Eagle is among the world's most exclusive wineries. The estate is known for its extremely low production, meticulous vineyard selection, and uncompromising focus on quality. The style focuses on finesse, balance, and texture, rather than pure power. Both vineyard and cellar are worked with the utmost precision, aiming to create wines that combine extended aging with remarkable refinement.
More information about this winery can be found under the Winery tab.
Region, climate and location
The Flight hails from Oakville, located in the heart of Napa Valley. This area is known for its alluvial soils and a climate influenced by cooling morning mist from San Pablo Bay. This results in a long growing season during which the grapes ripen slowly and fully develop their aromatic complexity. The 2015 vintage experienced predominantly warm conditions, yet with sufficient freshness to maintain tension and balance.
The Flight within the domain
The Flight is Screaming Eagle's second wine, but it's approached with the same attention and precision as the iconic main wine. Unlike the Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated Screaming Eagle, The Flight is Merlot-based, resulting in a more floral, aromatic, and textural style. The wine offers a different perspective on the estate's terroir, emphasizing finesse and elegance.
Vineyards
The grapes are sourced from select parcels within Screaming Eagle's vineyards in Oakville. The soils consist of well-draining alluvial deposits with stones and gravel, resulting in low yields and concentrated fruit. The combination of soil, exposure, and microclimate produces grapes with both ripeness and fresh tension.
Grape varieties and composition
The blend consists of 61 percent Merlot, 37 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, and 2 percent Cabernet Franc. Merlot forms the core of the wine, providing texture, aromatic refinement, and round tannins. Cabernet Sauvignon contributes structure and length, while Cabernet Franc adds freshness and floral nuances.
Harvest
The harvest took place under optimal conditions, with fully ripe grapes and retained natural acidity. Carefully chosen picking times allowed each grape variety to be harvested individually at its ideal ripeness point, contributing to precision and balance in the final blend.
Vinification
Vinification was carried out with a focus on gentle extraction to preserve the fine tannin structure. Fermentation and maceration were meticulously controlled, with each component vinified separately. This approach allows the final blend to be precisely tailored in terms of texture, aroma, and structure.
Maturation
The wine was aged in oak barrels, with a carefully balanced use of new wood. This aging enhances the structure and contributes to complexity, without overshadowing the aromatic clarity. The focus is on integration and refinement, in keeping with the wine's aging potential.
Color, smell and taste
The color is deep purple-black. The aroma reveals intense notes of black and blue fruit, such as blueberry, blackberry, and black plum, complemented by floral accents of violet and lavender. Subtle earthy notes, graphite, herbs, and a light spiciness add depth. On the palate, the wine is energetic and precise, with a medium to full body and very fine-grained, fresh tannins. The finish is long, layered, and minerally tinged.
Development and drinking window
The Flight 2015 combines remarkable accessibility with excellent cellaring potential. The wine already displays a harmonious character, but will develop additional complexity and nuance with further bottle aging. The drinking window runs from approximately 2021 to 2043, depending on storage temperature and conditions.
Summary of professional reviews
Lisa Perrotti-Brown rated this wine 97 points, highlighting its energy, freshness, and aromatic layering, with very fine-grained tannins and a long, earthy finish. Other professional reviews place the wine around 98 points, praising its balance, floral expression, and precision. The consensus is that The Flight 2015 is an exceptionally refined, Merlot-driven Napa Valley wine with great aging potential.

Very deep purple-black, the 2015 The Flight (a blend of 61% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 37% Cabernet Sauvignon) opens with electric notes of black and blue fruit sparks—wild blueberries, fresh blackberries and crushed black plums—with nuances of lavender, violets, pencil shavings, tilled soil, yeast extract and a waft of cinnamon stick. Medium to full-bodied, it hits the palate with tons of energy and freshness supported by firm, finely grained tannins, finishing with tons of fragrant earth layers.

This is very tight grained and beautifully balanced with violets, crushed stones and a brambleberry character. Extremely aromatic and perfumed. Medium to full body with a compressed mouthfeel of wonderfully fine and fresh tannins. A fantastic merlot-based red for the vintage. Structured yet so balanced. Beautiful now but better in 2021.

From: Brilliance in Napa Valley: 2016 & 2015 Cabernets (Jan 2018)
The 2015 The Flight, Screaming Eagle's Merlot-based wine, is terrific. Powerful, deep and explosive, the 2015 is endowed with serious richness and intensity in all of its dimensions. The 2015 is an especially dark, somber wine. As often happens with young Merlot-based wines, The Flight appears to be going through a somewhat closed phase at the moment. That won't be an issue once the wine has a bit more time to come together. Time in the glass brings out hints of lavender, gravel, red cherry, mocha and espresso. The 2015 is going to be fascinating to follow for the next several decades.
- By Antonio Galloni on December 2017
Winemaker Nic Gislason describes 2015 as a year with a very compressed harvest, especially compared to the far more relaxed and drawn out 2016. Speaking of the 2016s, the blends were not made when I stopped by the estate recently, but I tasted several component wines from barrel, all of which suggest the estate has plenty of first-rate materials to work with when it comes time to putting together the blends. Readers will notice a name change in The Flight, (previously known as Second Flight), a decision that was taken to allow The Flight to be seen as its own wine, rather than as a second wine of Screaming Eagle.

Screaming Eagle is an American winery located in Oakville, north of the city of Napa in the Napa Valley (California). It is especially famous for its very rare, limited production Cabernet Sauvignon wines.
History of Screaming Eagle
This winery was founded in 1986 by Jean Phillips, who sold grapes to several Napa Valley wineries. She purchased the 57-acre Oakville vineyard in 1986, which was planted with a mix of varieties, most of which were sold to various Napa wineries, except for 80 vines of Cabernet Sauvignon. For this one acre of Cabernet, Philips solicited the opinions of Robert Mondavi Winery employees on the commercial potential of its wine before hiring Richard Peterson as a consultant, and then met with Peterson's daughter, Heidi Peterson Barrett, who became Screaming Eagle's first winemaker. The entire vineyard was replanted in 1995 with three grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The 1992 vintage, released in 1995, through a combination of very low production numbers and very positive reviews, made Screaming Eagle one of the most celebrated and expensive wines in the Napa. In 1992, she released the first vintage Screaming Eagle wine. On March 17, 2006, the estate was sold to Stan Kroenke and Charles Banks. The new owners had exciting plans to keep the vineyard small, but raise the bar in terms of quality. In April 2009, Charles Banks left Screaming Eagle, leaving Stan Kroenke as the sole owner.
Production of Screaming Eagle
Screaming Eagle's production is rare, with a strong focus on quality. The vineyard is relatively small and the team takes a practical and precise approach to every aspect of winemaking. The vineyards extend over 48.21 acres (19.51 ha), planted with the varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and a small amount of Sauvignon blanc. The vineyards are managed by David Abreu Vineyard Management and cared for by Jorge Delgado and his team. In 2006, 34 hectares were replanted. Annual production ranges from 400 to 750 cases (between 5,000 and 9,000 bottles of 750 ml). The winemakers are Nick Gislason, Robert Black and Michel Rolland. Screaming Eagle is known for its extremely limited production, typically producing only a few hundred cases of wine per year. This limited availability has contributed to its reputation as one of the most exclusive and sought-after wineries in the world. This producer's Cabernet Sauvignon are highly praised for their exceptional quality, complexity and depth. Their reviews from wine critics are almost always excellent and the wines are considered among the finest wines produced in Napa Valley. The rarity and quality of Screaming Eagle wines make them among the most expensive in the world. They are often sold through allocation to a select group of customers, and prices on the secondary market can be exorbitantly high.
