Description
Remírez de Ganuza Winery
Founded in the late 1980s by Fernando Remírez de Ganuza, Remírez de Ganuza is considered one of Rioja's leading quality producers. The estate is known for its meticulous selection in the vineyard and uncompromising approach in the cellar. Only the finest grapes are used, and vinification is entirely focused on purity, balance, and long aging. The style is classic, yet with a remarkably precise and modern interpretation.
More information about this winery can be found under the Winery tab.
Region, climate and location
The vineyards are located in Rioja Alta, on the border between a cool Atlantic and a warmer continental climate. This location ensures a long growing season while maintaining freshness and aromatic tension. The 2012 vintage enjoyed favorable conditions, with sufficient ripeness, balance, and structure, essential for a Gran Reserva with long-term aging potential.
Gran Reserva within the domain
The Gran Reserva from Remírez de Ganuza is produced exclusively in vintages distinguished by quality and structure. This wine represents the house's most classic and enduring style. The focus is on complexity, finesse, and extended aging, both in barrel and bottle. The 2012 is a textbook example of this approach. The Gran Reserva is iconic and is only produced in the very best vintages. It has become incredibly famous, having been awarded the highest score by Robert Parker's Wine Advocate only six times to a Spanish wine, and also among the best wines in the world. Legendary wines such as Château Lafite-Rothschild 1986, Penfolds Grange 2008, Harlan Estate Proprietary Red Wine 1994 or Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia 1985 have been awarded 100 points, and during that period the Remírez de Ganuza Gran Reserva 2004 also received the maximum score of 100 points.
Vineyards
The grapes come from old vines on poor limestone and clay soils. These soils limit yield and ensure concentration and structure. The vineyard selection is extremely strict, forming the foundation for the wine's depth and precision.
Grape varieties and composition
The wine is based primarily on Tempranillo, supplemented with small percentages of Graciano. Tempranillo provides structure, ripe red fruit, and elegance, while Graciano adds freshness, spice, and extra tension. This classic blend is typical of high-quality Rioja Gran Reserva.
Harvest
The harvest is carried out entirely by hand, with a double selection of grapes and bunches. Only perfectly ripe and healthy fruit is used. After harvesting, the grapes are further sorted, with only the best parts of the bunch being used.
Vinification
Vinification is slow and controlled, aiming for maximum aromatic precision and refined structure. Extraction is carefully controlled to maintain a balance between power and finesse. This approach results in a wine with concentration, but without being ponderous.
Maturation
The Gran Reserva is aged extensively in oak barrels, followed by extensive bottle aging before release. This long aging allows for the integration of wood, tannins, and fruit, contributing to the complex, layered style characteristic of Remírez de Ganuza.
Color, smell and taste
The color is deep garnet red with slight development at the rim. The aroma reveals notes of ripe cherry, dried plum, tobacco, cedar, and spicy nuances, complemented by earthy and slightly balsamic notes. On the palate, the wine is layered and precise, with refined tannins, fresh acidity, and a long, balanced finish. The style is classic Rioja, emphasizing elegance and complexity.
Development and drinking window
The 2012 Gran Reserva is currently in a good stage of development, but still has sufficient structure for further aging. Since this wine is over 15 years old, wine is a natural product and aging can vary from bottle to bottle. Under good conditions, this wine can continue to evolve for many years to come.
Summary of professional reviews
This wine was awarded a Master Medal at the 2025 Rioja Masters and is praised for its balance, complexity, and classic style. Its combination of finesse, structure, and depth is considered exemplary of top-quality, mature Rioja.

The red 2009 Gran Reserva has some traces of classical Rioja and "old wine" character, despite being surprisingly youthful for a wine that is already ten years old. The wine is quite dark and represents the style of warm and dry vintage quite faithfully. The wine is powerful but has very good harmony, and the tannins are fine, round and mostly resolved; there is very good balance and harmony. It finishes dry and clean, with a long lingering aftertaste.
Remírez de Ganuza remains one of the most reliable sources for modern, ripe, concentrated, powerful and generously oaked Riojas around. You don't see that many dark and opaque Riojas that often. If that's the style you're looking for, look no further...

Grandcruwijnen is the Dutch Importer of the wines of the Top Rioja House: Remirez de Ganuza and we are very proud of this because Remirez de Ganuza belongs to the absolute top of Spain and is also highly appreciated internationally. All their wines score well above the 90 Parker and Penin point mark with the absolute peak for the 2004 Gran Reserva which has received a whopping 100 points.
The owner of this absolute top domain is Fernando Remirez de Ganuza. Obsessed with quality with an ongoing commitment to excellence in his wine, Fernando is the absolute pioneer in Innovation. At Remirez de Ganuza, even the smallest detail in the entire production chain of the wines is looked at and they are constantly optimizing. Fernado's motto is that exceptional quality can only be achieved through strict selection. His knowledge and experience with La Rioja vineyards make him one of the most appreciated winemakers in the region. The vineyards are spread over the villages of Samaniego, Laguardia, Leza and Elciego which are located in the most beautiful part of the Rioja namely the Rioja Alavesa. The bottom of the vineyards have a limestone clay composition with abundance of gravel and small round stones. Remirez de Ganuza only works with very old vines with an average age of 60 years or older. About 90% of the vines are Tempranillo, the rest of the vineyards include Graciano, Viura and Malvasia. The vineyards are 'en gobelet' but with a support on wire so that there is a larger exposure to the sun and better photosynthesis. A unique system that Fernando developed himself.
At the Remirez de Ganuza winery, the grapes undergo a strict selection, which also shows how quality-conscious but also how innovative Fernando is making absolute top wine. All grapes are harvested by hand and the grapes are first "rested" in the cooling chamber for 24 hours. First is separation from the bottom and shoulders of each cluster. Only the “los hombros” or the shoulders (the top part of the bunch of grapes) are used for his Reserva wines (Fincas de Ganuza, Remirez de Ganuza reserva and gran reserva and Trasnocho) because these are the most ripe grapes with the most sun seen.
