A few hundred bottles of the 2010 Remirez de Genuza Reserva were kept by Fernando and Jose Urtan and subjected to an extra-long bottle aging, and importers such as Grandcruwijnen in the Netherlands were able to purchase a number of cases of this wine from the fantastic 2010 vintage. Drinks Business ranked this wine in the top 10 best wines in the world. This is yet another milestone, which they also achieved with the 2004 Remirez Gran Reserva, which received 100/100 points from Parker.
Remírez de Ganuza Winery
Remírez de Ganuza was founded in the late 1980s by Fernando Remírez de Ganuza and is one of the absolute quality benchmarks of Rioja. The estate is known for its extremely strict selection, both in the vineyard and in the cellar. Only the best part of the grape cluster is used, and yields are deliberately kept low. The style is classic Rioja, but with an exceptionally precise and pure execution, focused on balance, structure, and long-term aging.

Region, climate and location
The vineyards are located in Rioja Alta, where Atlantic influences ensure moderate temperatures and sufficient freshness. This climate contributes to a long growing season and a gradual ripening of the grapes. The 2010 vintage is widely regarded as one of the great classic vintages of Rioja, with a perfect balance of ripeness, acidity, and structure.
Reserve within the domain
The Reserva forms the backbone of the Remírez de Ganuza range and demonstrates how classic Rioja and modern precision come together. The wine ages for a long time in wood and bottle and is only released when the structure is sufficiently integrated. In top vintages such as 2010, this Reserva displays a depth and aging potential that rivals many Gran Reservas.
Vineyards
The grapes come from old vines on calcareous and clayey soils. These soils naturally limit the yield and give the wine its characteristic structure and tension. Vineyard selection is extremely strict and forms the basis for the purity and concentration of the wine.

Vinification proceeds slowly and in a controlled manner, with an emphasis on gentle extraction. The aim is to achieve concentration without harshness. Fermentation and maceration are tailored to the character of the vintage, ensuring a balance between power and finesse.

The wine ages for a long period in oak barrels, followed by significant bottle aging before being released onto the market. This long aging ensures the integration of wood, tannins, and fruit, and contributes to the complex, layered style of the Reserva.
Color, smell and taste
The color is deep ruby red with slight development. The aroma reveals notes of ripe cherry, blackcurrant, tobacco, cedarwood, and fine spices, complemented by earthy and slightly balsamic nuances. On the palate, the wine is taut and precise, with refined tannins, fresh acidity, and distinct minerality. The finish is long, harmonious, and classic in style.

The 2010 Reserva is currently in a fine phase, but still has sufficient structure to age further. As this is a wine older than 15 years, it should be noted that wine is a natural product and aging can vary from bottle to bottle. Grandcruwijnen is the Dutch Importer of the wines of the Top Rioja House: Remirez de Ganuza and we are very proud of this because Remirez de Ganuza belongs to the absolute top of Spain and is also highly appreciated internationally. All their wines score well above the 90 Parker and Penin point mark with the absolute peak for the 2004 Gran Reserva which has received a whopping 100 points.
The owner of this absolute top domain is Fernando Remirez de Ganuza. Obsessed with quality with an ongoing commitment to excellence in his wine, Fernando is the absolute pioneer in Innovation. At Remirez de Ganuza, even the smallest detail in the entire production chain of the wines is looked at and they are constantly optimizing. Fernado's motto is that exceptional quality can only be achieved through strict selection. His knowledge and experience with La Rioja vineyards make him one of the most appreciated winemakers in the region. The vineyards are spread over the villages of Samaniego, Laguardia, Leza and Elciego which are located in the most beautiful part of the Rioja namely the Rioja Alavesa. The bottom of the vineyards have a limestone clay composition with abundance of gravel and small round stones. Remirez de Ganuza only works with very old vines with an average age of 60 years or older. About 90% of the vines are Tempranillo, the rest of the vineyards include Graciano, Viura and Malvasia. The vineyards are 'en gobelet' but with a support on wire so that there is a larger exposure to the sun and better photosynthesis. A unique system that Fernando developed himself.
At the Remirez de Ganuza winery, the grapes undergo a strict selection, which also shows how quality-conscious but also how innovative Fernando is making absolute top wine. All grapes are harvested by hand and the grapes are first "rested" in the cooling chamber for 24 hours. First is separation from the bottom and shoulders of each cluster. Only the “los hombros” or the shoulders (the top part of the bunch of grapes) are used for his Reserva wines (Fincas de Ganuza, Remirez de Ganuza reserva and gran reserva and Trasnocho) because these are the most ripe grapes with the most sun seen.
