Description
Schloss Johannisberg – an icon of German Riesling
Schloss Johannisberg is undoubtedly one of the most influential wineries in the world. The history of this legendary estate in the Rheingau dates back to the 9th century, and since 1720, exclusively Riesling has been grown there. This makes Schloss Johannisberg the first and oldest Riesling vineyard in the world. The castle itself is situated high above the Rhine, surrounded by a 50-hectare vineyard amphitheater that forms a semicircle around the estate. Today, the winery belongs to the Oetker family, who combine its historical heritage with modern viticultural techniques and sustainability. Each Schloss Johannisberg wine bears a colored wax seal that indicates its character and style – the Orangelack is synonymous with refined elegance and refreshing lightness.
The terroir of Schloss Johannisberg
The vineyards of Schloss Johannisberg are situated on the southern slopes of the Rheingau, enjoying maximum sunlight and the reflection of the Rhine. The soil consists primarily of Taunus quartzite with fertile loam and a thin layer of loess, enriched with iron oxide, which gives the soil a characteristic reddish-brown color. This composition imparts a distinct minerality and freshness to the wine. The unique location gives each wine from the estate its own unique tension and depth, with the Orangelack Kabinett being the most playful and expressive example.
A challenging harvest in 2024
The 2024 vintage tested winemakers across Germany. Spring began early with rapid bud break, followed by night frosts in April that caused local damage. The growing season was wet, with abundant rain and humid conditions. Summery weather only arrived in August, just in time for the grapes to ripen. Harvest began in late September and required meticulous hand selection to harvest only healthy, ripe bunches. Despite the challenging conditions, the vintage yielded surprisingly lively and aromatically pure wines, with a striking balance between fruity sweetness and refreshing acidity – precisely what characterizes a great Kabinett.
Vinification and maturation
The Riesling grapes for the Orangelack Kabinett 2024 were harvested entirely by hand and then gently pressed in a traditional basket press to preserve the delicate aromas. Fermentation took place entirely in stainless steel tanks to emphasize the freshness and purity of the fruit. This was followed by a short maturation on the fine lees in large wooden barrels made of oak from the château's own forests. This combination of modern precision and traditional aging results in a wine with pure expression, refined structure, and a lively tension between fruit, acidity, and sweetness.
Tasting note of the Schloss Johannisberg Orangelack Kabinett 2024
The nose opens with intense aromas of tropical fruits like pineapple and passion fruit, complemented by notes of yellow peach and freshly mown grass. In the second layer, delicate spicy notes of sage and mint emerge, giving the whole a fresh, aromatic lift. On the palate, the wine is juicy and lively, with a beautiful balance between ripe fruit and energetic acidity. The palate develops with nuances of orange, peach, and a light minerality that gives the whole a tension and refinement. The 34.5g/l residual sugar is perfectly balanced by 7.7g/l acidity, resulting in a refined Kabinett-style wine with impressive drinkability. The wine remains elegant and refreshing, with only 10% alcohol – ideal for lovers of delicate, balanced Rieslings.
Serving tips and storage potential
The Orangelack Kabinett 2024 is best enjoyed at a serving temperature of 7 to 9°C. This wine is already seductive in its youth, but can develop further over the next ten years, deepening its fruity notes and increasing its honeyed complexity. A classic Kabinett that gains in finesse and length with age.

This spectacular wine breaks the mold for this category, unifying lightness, succulence and great concentration. Yes, orange in the wide spectrum of aromas and flavors, along with apricot and papaya. Fantastic purity at the super-long and brilliant finish. From the eastern side of the hill of Schloss Johannisberg. Fermented in stainless steel, then matured in a 2,400-liter oak cask. From organically grown grapes with Fair'n Green certification. Drink or hold.

From: Rheingau and Nahe 2024: Rain, Frost and Unexpected Brilliance (Sep 2025)
The 2024 Riesling Schloss Johannisberg Orangelack Kabinett is the second Kabinett for the estate, marketed only at La Place de Bordeaux. It was picked in the eastern, slightly warmer part of the site, whole-bunch pressed in a basket press, then aged in Doppelstück with a cooling element. Red apple, spicy white grapefruit and crushed clover are wrapped in creaminess on the nose, expressing gorgeous purity. This has immense tension and vivid zestiness, clocking in at around 33 g/L of residual sugar and around 8 g/L of acidity. The 2024 has slightly more substance than its sibling, the Rotlack Kabinett, but just as much verve. (Medium)
- By Anne Krebiehl, MW on June 2025
Stefan Doktor, managing director at Schloss Johannisberg, set his sights on an early, speedy harvest in 2024. The team started picking Sekt base on September 19, and the main harvest began on September 23. When the big rain front came on October 7 and 8, harvest was almost complete. Doktor had hoped for the development of botrytis, but 2024 was the first time in 40 years that the estate did not make an Auslese. “We did not pick a single botrytized grape in 2024,” Doktor said. “That hurts, as nobody here can remember it ever happening before. It is not what we wished for.” In the end, sorting meant that yields amounted to around one-third less than the long-term average, but, as Doktor emphasized, “sorting was everything.” The wines repaid the effort. Schloss Johannisberg presented an exquisite collection in 2024. Doktor’s very clear vision has resulted in longer lees-aging and ever more brightness.

Schloss Johannisberg bottles "Qualitätswein" under a label with a yellow seal. The Qualitätsweine mit Prädikat (quality wines with special properties) are classified as follows: Rotlach for the medium quality cabinet wines, Orangelach for the best cabinet wines, Grünlach for the average Spätlesen, Weisslach for the large Spätlesen, Rosalach for the Auslesen, Blaulach for the best qualities Auslese and Goldlach for the Beeren- and Trockenbeerenauslesen. Bad years do not deliver superior quality wine; The Auslesen with sky blue seal and the Beerenauslesen with gold seal will therefore not be found. Sometimes a sparkling wine is made from the lighter and less good Riesling wine, which is sold under the name Fürst von Metternich Prädikats-Sekt.
Schloss Johannisberg in the Rheingau is undoubtedly Germany's most prestigious winery and the world renowned for its Rieslings. It is the oldest Riesling winery in the world. Wine has been made since 817 and 100% Riesling has been produced since 1720. The winery is centrally located in the area and has a rich history. Originally it was a monastery that was later used as a castle. It was even once owned by our royal family. The wines are the most elegant in the Rheingau area and gain in balance and flexibility as they age. In the beautiful wine cellar, a few bottles have been kept since 1748, so that now a unique collection has been created. Once every 25 years, the wines are inspected and provided with new corks. And, it is assured, even the oldest white wines are still very drinkable!
