Description
Schloss Johannisberg has its vineyards in the beautiful Rheingau. In general, the wines from the Rheingau are somewhat more refined and have character and a firmer taste than the wines from Rheinhessen and Rheinpfalz. One of the most beautiful wineries in the Rheingau is without a doubt Schloss Johannisberg. Schloss Johannisberg in the Rheingau is undoubtedly Germany's most prestigious winery and is world famous for its Rieslings. It is the oldest Riesling winery in the world. It has been produced there since 817 and since 1720 it has been 100% Riesling. The winery is centrally located in the area and has a rich history. Originally it was a monastery that was later used as a castle. It was even once owned by our royal family. The wines are the most elegant of the Rheingau area and gain in balance and suppleness as they age. In the magnificent wine cellar, a few bottles have been stored since 1748, so that a unique collection has now been created. Once every 25 years, the wines are tested and provided with new corks. And, it is assured, even the oldest white wines are still very drinkable!
The 2021 Riesling Schloss Johannisberg Goldlack is Johannisberg's wine above GG. Made in a limited edition, 30 months in wood. The slightest hint of beeswax appears initially, almost with a hint of speculoos cookie spice on the nose. The palate is a wonder, absolutely fluid in texture and slender but with absolute concentration. This has density but no weight. Texturally this is different from other Rieslings, calmer and quieter, but with no less intention. Quite the contrary in fact. The malolactic fermentation produces a soft finish that is deceptive, as the final acidity in this dry wine still reached an exciting 8.2 g/L. (bone-dry).

Sourced in the south/southwest-exposed lieux-dits Urban-Wingert, Langenberg and Mäuerchen Quer and sold exclusively via the Place de Bordeaux, the intensely yellow-colored 2021 Schloss Johannisberg Goldlack Riesling Trocken (not the GG Silberlack) represents the qualitative top of the dry Rieslings of the winery. After the manual harvest of the berries during the first nine days of October and after 48 hours of maceration, the must was gently pressed and fermented in 1,200-liter oak stücks made from the family's own forest and a few smaller barrels. The wine matured for 24 months on the fine lees in the nine-meter-deep Bibliotheca Subterranea cellar at 10.5 degrees Celsius before being bottled in February 2024. Coming from a cooler and rainier year, the 2021 offers a deep, pure, intense and elegant nose of ripe yellow fruits but also black and blue berries intertwined with yeasty and flinty notes and nuances of heath and mint. Full-bodied, intense and saline on the palate, this is a distinctively ripe and juicy as well as mineral, very elegant and savory, intense and seriously structured dry Riesling with a very long, complex and aromatic as well as finely tannic and lemon-bitter finish. It has remarkable acidity (of 8.2 grams per liter). 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in early July and again at the domaine at the end of August 2024. The wine will be available from 21 October of this year, and it is best served in a wide Burgundy or Bordeaux glass, where its intensity is even more intensified and its texture significantly smoother.
Schloss Johannisberg has been a certified organic winery for two years. The changeover could not have been more challenging with the 2023 vintage. “The harvest was a struggle because there was a lot of pressure due to the warm and humid air,” reports Stefan Doktor, an athlete—he races through the world's ice channels on a luge—who naturally knows and appreciates challenges. “You had to work as quickly as possible and press until 3 a.m. because the yeasts were already active in the vineyard. Before the big harvest team arrived on September 18, we had already brought in 40% of our grapes—all in a healthy state and physiologically ripe, with high acidity—the week before with the pre-harvest team. A week later, we had 80%.” In total, the harvest took a little less than three weeks. By the end of September, everything had been harvested, including two spectacularly precise botrytis wines, a Beerenauslese and a Trockenbeerenauslese, both of which have crazy acidity levels and precise fruit aromas, as if Albrecht Dürer had drawn them. They are the highlights of the Schloss Johannisberg 2023 vintage and are made to last.
The average yield in 2023 was 56 hectoliters per hectare. In the end, Stefan Doktor himself was impressed by the quality of the musts and even more so by the wines with their superbly pronounced tartaric acidity. The highlight for next year has already been bottled. For the upcoming 250th anniversary of Spätlese, which was discovered here in 1775, 1,000 bottles have been made of the Riesling Schloss Johannisberg Ex-Bibliotheca Subterranea Cuvée 100 Spätlese, which blends numerous Spätlese vintages back to 1915.

Prepare yourself to meet the spirit of great mineral dry riesling. Gigantic dried peach and dried pear notes, but even more flinty character. A wealth of dried herbs, too. Immense concentration of stony minerality that washes over you like a great wave. Matured for two and a half years in 1,200-liter used oak cases, the last year in the deepest and oldest section of the cellar. Drink or hold.

From: Rheinhessen & Rheingau: Riesling Triumphs After Rain (Oct 2024)
The 2021 Riesling Schloss Johannisberg Goldlack is Johannsiberg's wine positioned above the GG. Made in limited quantity, it spent 30 months in wood. The merest touch of beeswax appears initially, almost with a hint of speculoos biscuit spice on the nose. The palate is a marvel, absolutely fluid in texture and slender but with absolute concentration. this has density but no weight. Texturally, this is different from other Rieslings, calmer and quieter, but with no less intent or direction. On the contrary, it conquers quietly but completely. The malolactic fermentation delivers a mellow finish that is deceptive, since the final acidity in this dry wine still reached an exciting 8.2 g/L. (Bone-dry)
- By Anne Krebiehl MW on August 2024
Tasting 2023 at Schloss Johannisberg was a highlight of the tour. Stefan Doktor notes, "Two thousand twenty-three was not easy, but just like in sports, you grow with your challenges, and when the going gets tough, those who are best prepared come out on top.” This analogy is apt as Doktor competed and still competes in luge internationally. “Two thousand twenty-three was the opposite of 2022. We had wet weather during harvest, and grapes developed so rapidly that we had an unusually rapid harvest,” he says. “We asked our picking team to arrive on September 18, but some had already arrived on September 11 for pre-harvest preparations, so we plunged straight into harvest on September 12. When the rest of the team arrived, 40% of the grapes were already in the cellar. A week later, 80%.” He notes that they had to select most stringently but brought in “incredibly healthy botrytis” with harvest concluding by the end of September. Fruit, he says, “had high, bold acidity levels in combination with clearly defined aromas.” He compares this element of 2023 to 2010. Doktor presented two new wines in the portfolio and a one-off: a new entry-level dry Riesling called Prince Metternich and a Kabinett called Orangelack to represent a different Kabinett style from the established Rotlack. The one-off is a non-vintage blend made to commemorate the upcoming 250th anniversary of Spätlese discovered here in 1775. Just 1,000 bottles were made. "This is something you can only do once," Stefan Doktor adds, calling this creation Riesling Schloss Johannisberg Ex-Bibliotheca Subterranea Cuvée 100 Spätlese. Doktor has a very clear idea of what he wants to achieve and delivers stunning wines that do justice to Johannisberg’s history and reputation.

Schloss Johannisberg bottles "Qualitätswein" under a label with a yellow seal. The Qualitätsweine mit Prädikat (quality wines with special properties) are classified as follows: Rotlach for the medium quality cabinet wines, Orangelach for the best cabinet wines, Grünlach for the average Spätlesen, Weisslach for the large Spätlesen, Rosalach for the Auslesen, Blaulach for the best qualities Auslese and Goldlach for the Beeren- and Trockenbeerenauslesen. Bad years do not deliver superior quality wine; The Auslesen with sky blue seal and the Beerenauslesen with gold seal will therefore not be found. Sometimes a sparkling wine is made from the lighter and less good Riesling wine, which is sold under the name Fürst von Metternich Prädikats-Sekt.
