Description
The Kühn family has been involved in winemaking for centuries. The estate, which dates back to the 18th century, has been passed down from generation to generation. Under the leadership of Peter Jakob Kühn, the estate underwent a transition to organic and biodynamic farming practices. This move reflects a commitment to sustainable viticulture and a holistic approach to grape cultivation.
Like many top German winemakers, Peter Jakob Kühn places a strong emphasis on Riesling. Riesling is known for its ability to express terroir and can produce wines ranging from dry to sweet. Kühn follows a philosophy of minimal intervention in the winemaking process. The goal is to allow the true character of the grape and vineyard to shine through in the final wines. The estate follows biodynamic principles in its vineyards. Biodynamics involves treating the vineyard as a self-sustaining ecosystem, taking into account lunar cycles and natural preparations to improve soil and plant health. Kühn often uses natural or spontaneous fermentation using indigenous yeasts. This can contribute to the complexity and unique character of the wines. Kühn produces a range of single-vineyard wines that showcase the individual characteristics of specific locations. The estate is known for making both dry and sweet Rieslings, which cater to a spectrum of preferences. Wines from Peter Jakob Kühn have received critical acclaim and awards for their quality and expression of terroir.
The most valuable part of the Doosberg is located on the eastern edge of Oestrich, at 120 m above sea level with a moderately steep slope of 15% and a southern exposure. The soil consists of calcareous loess loam above terrace deposits and rock of the Alzey formation (marine sand), which is crossed by Taunus quartz. It is a fairly exposed hilltop with constant wind, which offers good conditions for healthy growth of the vines and good ripening development of the grapes. "Doos" is Rheingau dialect for "roof".
The straw-yellow 2019 Doosberg Riesling Trocken GG offers a deep, complex and slightly flint bouquet of ripe yet cool, spicy fruit, interwoven with notes of crushed stone and lemon peel. Full-bodied, enormously fresh and salty on the palate, this is a rich and intense, yet possibly even purer, refined and elegant dry Riesling with crystalline acidity and a stimulating, refreshing phenolic grip.

The intensely lemon-yellow colored 2019 Doosberg Riesling Trocken GG offers a deep, complex and slightly flinty bouquet of ripe but coolish and spicy fruits intertwined with notes of crushed stones and lemon peel. Full-bodied, enormously fresh and saline on the palate, this is a rich and intense but possibly even more pure, refined and elegant dry Riesling with a filigreed structure, crystalline acidity and stimulating, refreshing phenolic grip. This Doosberg is less monolithic than in other vintages but reveals surprising precision, finesse and filigreed purity that is reminiscent of slate and quartzite rather than deep clay. This is still very young but highly promising. The 2019 Doosberg was aged in doppelstück and stück for one year and for another six months on the fine lees in stainless steel. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in April 2022.

PETER JAKOB KÜHN RIESLING RHEINGAU ST. NIKOLAUS GG 2019
Monday, October 4, 2021
Country : Germany
Region : Rheingau
Vintage : 2019
Score : 91
Quite some butter-caramel (from malolactic fermentation?), which isn’t exactly a classic riesling aroma, but this is balanced by a very positive tannin structure. Everything fits very neatly at the long finish. Drink or hold.
