Description
About Weingut Günther Steinmetz and the Moselle
Weingut Günther Steinmetz is located in the village of Brauneberg on the Middle Mosel. Since its founding in the 1950s, the family-run business has grown into one of Germany's most respected wineries. Under the leadership of Stefan Steinmetz, the steep slopes of Brauneberger Juffer, Kestener Paulinsberg, and Wintricher Geierslay, among others, are cultivated entirely by hand. His philosophy focuses on minimal intervention, low yields, and maximum expression of soil and location.
The Mosel is one of Germany's coolest wine regions. The combination of steep slopes, poor slate soils, and reflective river light ensures a long growing season and unique freshness. Steinmetz wines are known for their precision, tension, and transparency—wines that literally seem to capture "stone in liquid form."
The Wintricher Geierslay vineyard
The Wintricher Geierslay is located south of the village of Wintrich and is one of the region's most distinctive terroirs. Its name refers to the "Geyerslay," or vulture rock, a steep slope of blue-gray slate that shimmers in the sun. The slope faces south to southwest, catching optimal sunlight, while cool nights maintain the acidity.
The vines for this wine are on average over 60 years old . Their roots reach deep into the weathered slate, imparting minerality and tension to the wine. The combination of age, steepness, and small-scale cultivation results in a Kabinett of exceptional purity and balance. The wine comes from a single plot in the middle of the slope, where the soil is particularly rich in rock and fine quartz fragments.
Vinification according to the official fact sheet
The grapes were harvested entirely by hand in the last week of October 2024 and rigorously selected. The must was slowly and spontaneously fermented with indigenous yeasts, without temperature control, to preserve the natural aromatic development. After fermentation, the wine remained on the fine lees to develop structure and complexity.
The wine is an off-dry Kabinett in the most classic sense: refreshing, low in alcohol, yet with enormous depth and tension. No fining or filtering took place before bottling, which contributes to the wine's texture and authenticity. Total production is very limited, and the recommended drinking window is from 2030 to 2065 .
Tasting notes and character
In the glass, the wine displays a bright, pale gold color with a subtle green shimmer. The aroma is intense and precise: wet slate, salty minerality, light smoke , and then aromas of green apple, lime, and white blossom . This layering is typical of Geierslay – cool, mineral, and elegant.
On the palate, the wine is sleek and refined, with an impressive tension between sweetness and vibrant acidity. The 2024 vintage is exceptionally energetic and pure. The 11.5 grams of acid per liter impart an almost electric freshness, while the subtle residual sweetness rounds out the structure. The wine feels crystal clear, light-footed, and endlessly precise.
According to Vinous (97 points), this is “a wine that smells like wet slate, with salt and smoke; the taste is delicate, energetic and endlessly precise – a dream of a Kabinett that feels completely authentic.” The wine has a rare balance between elegance and power, with a finish that lingers for minutes.
The 2024 wine year
The 2024 growing season was challenging but exceptional for those, like Steinmetz, who applied strict selection. A cool spring delayed flowering, but the warm September days and cool October nights ensured optimal ripening and retained freshness. Due to the age of the vines and limited fruit set, yields were approximately one-third lower than usual.
Stefan Steinmetz described the vintage as "nothing short of breathtaking." He said the dry wines and Kabinetts from 2024 demonstrate unprecedented precision. This Wintricher Geierslay Kabinett is a prime example: a wine in which energy, purity, and tension are perfectly balanced.
Serving tips and storage potential
This Kabinett is already refined, but will become even more complex with a few years of bottle aging. Serve at around 8°C in a slender Riesling glass to allow the delicate aromas to fully unfold.
The wine has exceptional aging potential: it will retain its tension and refinement until 2065. Its light alcohol content and balance of acidity and residual sweetness also make it a versatile companion at the table.

From: 2024 Mosel, Saar and Ruwer: Tales of Woe and Wow (Oct 2025)
The 2024 Riesling Wintricher Geierslay Kabinett is like wet slate on the nose. It is salty and so stony, with a touch of smoky reduction. The palate adds a note of apple flesh. Raciness and brightness come together and drive down into the stone and fruit tones. The super svelte palate is a dream. The 2024 has a kind of quintessential Kabinett style. The finish is endless, leaving you in no doubt that you have tasted something absolutely authentic. The 2024 is incredibly incisive. Its 11.5 g/L of killer acidity meets around 40 g/L of residual sugar. (Off-dry)
- By Anne Krebiehl MW on August 2025
Stefan Steinmetz presented a collection that is nothing short of breathtaking. He seemingly captures pure stone. The focus is on dry Rieslings and Kabinetts in 2024. Steinmetz noted that the dry wines all fermented easily to 0.2 to 3 grams per liter of residual sugar, giving the wines incisive brilliance. The off-dry Kabinetts are especially hair-raising. Frost only marginally hit Steinmetz’s parcels in the upper rows of the Juffer, close to the forest. His Pinot Noir in the Kestener Herrenberg also frosted. Nonetheless, yields were about one-third lower than usual due to less fruit set, old vines and some sorting at harvest. Picking started in mid-September with Pinot and finished in the last week of October.

Wijnhuis
