Description
The background of Pagodes de Cos and Château Cos d'Estournel
Pagodes de Cos is the second wine estate from Château Cos d'Estournel, a historic estate in Saint-Estèphe, founded in 1791 by Louis-Gaspard d'Estournel. Known for his oriental influences and visionary approach, he transformed the estate into an architectural gem with its iconic pagodas and Zanzibar Gate. Since 2000, the estate has been owned by Michel Reybier, who is dedicated to perpetuating its legacy. Pagodes de Cos Blanc is the result of twenty years of experience producing refined white wines.
The location and terroir of Pagodes de Cos Blanc
The vineyards for Pagodes de Cos Blanc are located in the northern part of the Médoc, near the Gironde estuary. This location benefits from a cool microclimate with natural ventilation from the ocean. This contributes to the slow and even ripening of the grapes, essential for developing aromatic precision. Through replanting and sustainable cultivation methods, the terroir's full potential is utilized.
Grape varieties and winemaking of Pagodes de Cos Blanc 2024
The 2024 Pagodes de Cos Blanc is composed of 61% Sémillon and 39% Sauvignon Blanc. The vines, some of which are up to 39 years old, guarantee refined concentration and aromatic complexity. Careful selection, modern vinification techniques, and a commitment to perfection result in a white wine with an expressive style and distinctive character.
Character, aroma and taste of Pagodes de Cos Blanc 2024
This 2024 vintage is characterized by its lively expression and excellent balance. On the nose, the wine seduces with fresh aromas of grapefruit, orange peel, and mint tea. On the palate, it displays a pleasant tension, a rich texture, and a long, complex finish. The combination of citrusy freshness and gentle spice makes this white Bordeaux vibrant and multi-layered.

A blend of 61% Sémillon and 39% Sauvignon Blanc, the 2024 Pagodes de Cos Blanc reveals a delicate, elegant bouquet of spring flowers, pear and white fruits mingled with boxwood. Medium-bodied, lively and incisive, it's juicy and round with bright acids that lead to a long, mouthwatering finish. This is a nice rendition of this cuvée.

A vintage with very high acidity, but for my palate this is quite bright and attractive, with good density. Quite long, with creamy guava and green mango flavors that linger in the finish. 61% semillon and 39% sauvignon blanc.

The 2024 Pagodes de Cos Blanc, which has one of the lowest pH levels and more Sémillon (61%), offers pretty lime, white peach and orange pith scents with just a touch of lychee in the background. The palate is clean and fresh on the entry with a fine bead of acidity, good weight on the mid-palate and a slightly pithy finish. This has good potential.

Dominique Arangoïts has been at the helm of Cos d’Estournel since 2000, overseeing a change in approach and some of the greatest vintages in recent years. The rather bombastic wines of the noughties have been replaced by more refined and precise wines that culminated in the exceptional 2016. I made two visits to the estate at the beginning and end of my trip, and, as with Montrose, the second assessment was superior to the first.
“We started the season with a lot of rain—a record since the 2000 vintage,” Arangoïts explains. “This rain, combined with the cold, continued until the beginning of July. We had to fight against the mildew and coulure disturbed flowering for both Cabernet and Merlot, plus millerandage appeared in the old Merlot vines. Consequently, bunches were less compact, which improved sanitary conditions. The weather became dry from July 13 to August 29. We had 47 days with only 11 mm of rain and the vines had sufficient stress to ripen the tannins. Then, there was a rainy period until September 12, 53 mm, which meant we could avoid any blockage. We waited until we could achieve the correct ripeness levels and started picking the old Merlot on September 23. In 2024, we found that our gravel soils tended to produce more precocious fruit that was important in the final blend. We finished with around 30 hl/ha [a lower figure], which tided us over through the late ripening. The low level of nitrogen in the must, a result of the cold early season and more grass grown between vines than usual, ultimately proved helpful in avoiding botrytis. We had to chaptalize some of the Cabernets but we did not do any saignée because of the old vines.”

Château Cos d'Estournel is a winery in the Saint-Estèphe appellation in the Bordeaux region of France. It is also the name of the red wine produced by this property. The wine produced here was classified as one of fifteen Deuxièmes Crus (Second Growths) in the original Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855.
Château Cos d'Estournel produces the eponymous grand vin, the second wine since the 1994 vintage, Les Pagodes de Cos from the estate's younger vines, as well as Château Marbuzet from fruit from nearby plots. The property is adjacent to Château Lafite-Rothschild in the neighboring commune of Pauillac. The name Cos refers to a "mound of pebbles" in the Gascon dialect and the name Cos d'Estournel was given in 1810 by Louis-Gaspard d'Estournel.
The estate has changed hands several times throughout its history, beginning in 1852 when it was purchased by English banker Charles Cecil Martyns. In 1869 it was sold to the Spanish Errazu family, only to be sold again 20 years later, in 1889, to the Hostein family from Bordeaux. Through his marriage to Marie-Thérèse Hostein, Louis-Victor Charmolue, who also owned Château Montrose, acquired control of Cos d'Estournel in 1894. In 1917 it was sold to Fernand Ginestet. The chateau has remained in the Ginestet family ever since, becoming part of Domaines Prats in 1970, the combined property of the Ginestet and Prats families, and controlled by Bruno Prats.
In June 2008, it was announced that Michel Reybier, the current owner of Cos d'Estournel, has purchased Napa winery Chateau Montelena. However, in November 2008, this agreement was canceled, the termination of the transaction by Chateau Montelena allegedly due to the fact that Reybier Investments had "been unable to meet its obligations". From an estate of 100 hectares, the vineyard area extends over 70 hectares (170 acres), divided into 30 parcels, mainly composed of the grape varieties 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot, with a small cultivation of Cabernet Franc and Petit verdot that seems participate too little in modern production. Annual production is typically 32,000 cases.
