the Hispano-Suizas winery

Bodega Hispano-Suizas, located in Requena, Valencia, is known for producing wines that blend traditional Spanish grape varieties with international varietals. The winery was founded by three friends—one Spaniard and two Swiss—who combined their passion and expertise. Their goal is to combine the power of terroir with modern precision in every bottle. With the Impromptu Sauvignon Blanc, they demonstrate how international grape varieties can retain freshness and elegance even in the warm Spanish region. Hispano-Suizas wines are now among the finest (both in Spain and internationally).

vineyard and location

The grapes for this wine come from a vineyard at an altitude of 700 meters in Requena. The high altitude creates significant temperature variations between day and night, helping the grapes retain their fresh acidity and aromatic intensity. The soil consists of calcareous clay, which gives the wine structure and minerality. The vineyard is planted exclusively with Sauvignon Blanc and produces low yields, contributing to the high quality and concentration of the grapes.

the 2024 harvest

The finest Sauvignon Blanc grapes from a vineyard with a (deliberately) very low yield are hand-picked very early in the morning and immediately transferred to a cold room. From there, the grapes are selected crate by crate, and only the best grapes go into this 100% Sauvignon Impromptu. The grapes are pressed very lightly so that only the first free-flowing juice is used. This is then fermented in new American oak barrels on its own must. Once fermentation is complete, the wine remains on its must until bottling, and this process is done almost unfiltered to preserve all its flavors.

vinification and maturation

After a gentle pressing, the juice was fermented in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature to preserve the delicate aromas. The wine then matured for several months on its fine lees in 400-liter French oak barrels, with bâtonnage applied to enhance complexity, creaminess, and length. This aging process combines the fresh and fruity style of Sauvignon Blanc with an elegant structure and subtle oak influences.

color, smell and taste

The Sauvignon Blanc "Impromptu" has a powerful bouquet of smoke, beeswax, and granite that you might not immediately recognize as a Sauvignon Blanc—more like a Viognier. In the glass, the wine has a beautiful pale yellow color with green hues. On the nose, it has very intense aromas of minerals and tropical fruit. The palate is very well balanced with fine tannins and subtle notes of walnut and mandarin, leading to a very composed, long finish. The wine is exceptionally well-balanced with excellent acidity. This is truly a "full glass." On the palate, one tastes a rich, fruity weight, fresh yet not sweet, good acidity, and a very long and harmonious finish. This Impromptu is a beautiful Sauvignon Blanc, and it's a shame that only a very limited number of bottles are ever produced.

storage potential

This wine is excellent to drink even when young, but thanks to its aging on the lees and its robust structure, it can also continue to develop over the next 3 to 7 years. This makes it both a wine to enjoy immediately and a bottle to linger on.

The Hispano Suizas estate is the story of the conviction to make a dream come true.

The history of the Hispano Suizas winery

Hispano Suizas was founded in 2006 by three passionate winemakers with a shared vision to create a world-class winery. Pablo Ossorio, Rafael Navarro, and Marc Grin were united by their common passion for wine and their desire to introduce innovations in viticulture. With their extensive experience in both national and international wine markets, they transformed Hispano Suizas into a winery that gained significant recognition in a short time. The winery has been awarded numerous prizes and is loved by wine enthusiasts worldwide.

Their goal: To produce high-quality wine and make it accessible to the growing number of wine lovers. This requires daily care and attention to ensure the best way to produce exceptional wine. They have been meticulous and patient during production, knowing that the right combination can yield an exceptionally beautiful result. The ambition is high; producing masterful wine and making it accessible to the consumer are often conflicting goals.

The region where Hispano Suizas is located

Hispano Suizas is located in the Utiel-Requena region, Valencia, one of the most important wine areas in Spain. This region is part of the autonomous community of Valencia and enjoys an ideal climate for viticulture. With hot summers and cool nights, the area offers the perfect conditions for the development of complex and flavorful wines. The limestone-rich soil and the altitude of the vineyards contribute to the distinctive flavor profiles of the wines produced here.

Viticulture at Hispano Suizas

Hispano Suizas combines modern techniques with age-old methods to guarantee high quality. The wines grow in an area covering 61 hectares, 46 hectares of which surround the winery, while the remaining 15 hectares are only 500 meters away. The vineyards are meticulously maintained, with a focus on sustainable viticultural practices. The grapes are handpicked to ensure only the best quality is selected. Precision is maintained throughout the entire process, from grape cultivation to bottling, to ensure consistent quality.

What grape varieties are used?

Hispano Suizas uses a variety of grape types, both local and international. Some of the main grapes used include Bobal, a regional variety known for producing wines with deep color and robust flavor, and Tempranillo, renowned for its versatility and refinement. Additionally, grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir are cultivated to create unique blends and single varietals. For white wines, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay are used, resulting in fresh and aromatic products.

Approximately 4,000 vines grow per hectare, allowing the winery to work with great precision to cultivate and harvest the best quality grapes. The production per vine is only 2 kg. Due to the diversity of grapes grown, the harvest spans almost three months, starting with the cava in August and concluding with the red wines in October.
