The history of Château Latour-Martillac

Château Latour-Martillac is located in the heart of the Pessac-Léognan appellation and has been part of the select group of Grands Crus Classés de Graves since 1953. The domain has been owned by the Kressmann family since the end of the 19th century. Jean Kressmann, a pioneer of white wine production in the Graves, played a key role in building the château's reputation. Today, the current generations combine tradition with modern oenological insights to produce wines with expression, structure and longevity.

Location, climate and terroir in Pessac-Léognan

The vineyards of Château Latour-Martillac are located in Martillac, south of Bordeaux. The white grape varieties are planted on gravelly soils with clay and limestone, ideal for Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. The climate is oceanic with mild winters and warm summers. The vines benefit from good ventilation, sufficient sunshine and a moderate growing season that ensures slow, even ripening of the grapes.

Grape varieties and harvest of Latour-Martillac Blanc 2024

The 2024 blend is 60% Sauvignon Blanc and 40% Sémillon. The harvest took place from 4 to 19 September, after a growing season with alternating warm and wet periods. The grapes reached optimum ripeness thanks to the cool summer temperatures and the late but homogeneous véraison. Despite the rain during the harvest, precise timing and careful selection allowed healthy bunches to be picked with pronounced aromatic expression.

Vinification and maturation in oak barrels

Fermentation and maturation took place in French oak barrels, 20% of which were new. This maturation provides structure and depth without overpowering the fresh character of the wine. The yield was 52 hectoliters per hectare. The wine is matured for several months on its fine lees, which gives it extra creaminess and complexity.

Color, aroma and taste of Château Latour-Martillac Blanc 2024

The wine has a bright, light yellow colour with green reflections. On the nose it is aromatic with aromas of nectarine, apricot and subtle citrus influences, such as pink grapefruit. On the palate the wine is light and precise, with a soft texture and lively acidity. The finish is mineral, slightly salty and long-lasting – characteristics that make this white Bordeaux extremely suitable for gastronomic applications.

The estate owes its name to the tower that stands in the courtyard of the castle. It is the remnant of a fortress built in the 12th century by Montesquieu's ancestors. At that time, the fortress had a strategic position and controlled the road that connected Bordeaux to Toulouse. The stones of the fortress were used at the end of the 18th century to build the current castle.

In 1871, the estate attracted the attention of Edouard Kressmann, who had just founded his trading house in Bordeaux. He was seduced by the quality of the white wines. Alfred Kressmann, Edouard's eldest son, finally bought the estate in 1930. He changed the name to Château Latour-Martillac. Today, Jean Kressmann's children continue the family tradition, with Tristan and Loïc, the two youngest sons, in charge of the general management. Year after year, with the help of the best oenologists in Bordeaux, they make the most of this authentic "terroir de Graves".
